New to smoker Builder.

Post by Mgraves » March 23rd, 2018, 11:25 am

This is my first time posting on smoker builders.

I am an Ag teacher in the great state of mo. I run the metal construction shop at the school. So I have had the joy of building all kinds of projects Trailers, fire pits, bbq grills, smokers, benches, ect. I have built two of Frank Cox's designs and working on my third. The first build was reverse flow smoker, 40" di. with offset fire box, custom warmer, on custom axles/trailer. (which raise and lowers the whole smoker for towing or for smoking). The second build was a custom 40" DIAMETER SANTA MARIA BBQ GRILL/ trailer. The third smoker is a dp gf smoker, which I am trying to document.

We love to cook pork burgers on this monster. Holds about 50 at a time. The custom shelf is great for prep and two roasters.

Thanks

The big trailer pulls pretty hard. Max speed about 35mph. Small pulls easy also max speed about 35mph. Both trailer smoker/grill design this away on purpose to keep the close to home. Both of these smoker/ grill belong to the FFA chapter used for fundraising. However other organizations like to use our cool toys. So buildings them to go slow and pull hard, keeps them with in a couple miles of home.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by “it pulls hard?”

How did you go about making the trailer elevate?? I’m interested in trying to make that a trailer mod. I personally think that’s cool. Can you post pics or a YouTube video of this operation

I have not put the big reverse smoker on the scales but she is heavy. I built it with a lot of tongue weight. There is no suspension. Once again done on purpose, don’t want this smoker going very far from home. So with the combination of the heavy trailer, heavy tongue weight, and no suspension. The trailer pulls or pushes back. The trail doesn't swing. It has electric brakes, just never hooked up, this would help with the push. Tires are on the narrow side being on about 4' apart on center. This was done to keep tires out of the way. When cooking I hate tripping over tires. This rig was never meant to go very fast, the rig has never been more than a mile from home. That being said, I have never taken it over 35mph. I would not recommend, this set-up to be pulled down a highway. If took the smoker more than a mile from home, it would ride on another trailer.

I will work on a video. These are some old pic during fabrication. The long arm gets pinned or unpinned to lock it in travel or up. I get three people to help. Jacks on three points. Two jacks on fire box and one jack on tongue. Lift and lower at the same time. The axle swings from a point 10” (maybe) above axles. Tires roll forward getting away from heat of fire box. I would not recommend, this set-up to be pulled down a highway. Just to move around campus, or up to town square (1/8) mile fair grounds ( 3/4 mile).
