This is where you get to soak in all the pride of the finished smoker and food. Congratulations! Fun part....sneaking a peak at the faces of people in cars as they pass by while you're trailing that baby down the road B-)

Having to put my shiny new toy on a shelf for 5 or 6 months is kind of a bummer. I'm used to seasonal only activities after almost 40 years in this state but this winter will be rougher than most I think. I can't wait to see my co-workers' faces when I pull this thing up to the shop and feed the building out of it. The 'holy crap you built this?' first reaction is good for the soul as you guys already know. Seeing them react to the food that I make is even more so. In the mean time I still have my ceramic egg to hone my flavors and technique with. It's not the same, but it'll have to do!

Although the smoker was functional as of last October I've been chugging away on completing the features on the trailer and making it street legal so I can get it titled and licensed.

I ended up chopping, dropping, and extending the tongue--it was just too high to comfortably hitch.

Started wiring.

Belly pan under the CC

Deck for the wood/utility box
Image

Wood box frame test fit. It doesn't go all the way to the CC because the counterweights on the CC doors need room to swing. I'm not done thinking about that gap and what I'm going to do with it yet. I'd like to keep rain and snow out of there, plus create dead air for more efficient temps and such, plus tying the two masses together on the trailer is a good thing. The problem is just that there are so many options I haven't been able to choose.
P.S. That's not dust, it's pollen. It was pooling up in drifts everywhere.

Door test fit

16 ga. sheet metal skinning

I learned that I'm not a great steel cabinet maker. Things are pretty wrinkly.

MEMORIAL DAY BREAK--THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT RIGHT?

Wood/utility box Door assembly: It took some time to decide to how door trim strap and gasketing is going to work--finally got it figured out enough to get some hinges tacked on...
Image

Hopefully I can get the doors wrapped up and get some paint on the back side of the wood box (way easier to do before it's permanently affixed than after), and get this box on.

Still to come:
Fender trim/straighten and paint
Shelf for CC
Taillights
Cooler and misc basket storage on the tongue
Possibly a grill up front--gotta eat while you're smoking after all...

Stay tuned...

Bb

Got the other door hung. The latch needs some augmentation though:

The doors don't close tight when latched yet. I need a spring latch or a barrel bolt or something to make things stay snug.

I know it hurts when those dollars are flying out but you're building something that'll be around long after you're gone. You're doing a fine job !

Well, I got pleasantly sidetracked for much of July and August, but I'm making a big push to get this wood box finished.

Positive latch for the doors
Image

Front sheet metal on
Image

Cleaned and primed (there's masking around the bottom so it will be clean to weld when the time comes)
Image

Fenders cut more to my liking and cleaned up for weld/paint
Image

Soon as I get a coat of high-temp on the side facing the cook chamber, the wood box can go on.

Painted the box, masking the bottom where I needed to weld, welded box to trailer.
Image
Image

Doors not painted but test fit went well.

Image

Added some angle iron to the ends to make the joint between the box and the deck look better and be better sealed.
Primed the remaining bare metal and got some enamel on it, doors too.

I still need to figure out how to do taillights. I don't think putting them on the fenders is going to pass inspection to get a VIN and license plates/registration with the State Motor Vehicles Division though because of the 26" of firebox hiding the left one. Keeping the taillight wiring on the left side from getting too hot from the firebox extending it to the back edge is my main concern (and making it look reasonable at the same time. Alas, there were snow flurries this morning, so it's time to make sure everything outside is cleaned up before it disappears for 6 months, so I'm not sure I'll get to taillights this season.

Clearance is just right

Fired it up on Saturday

Some pretty awesome brisket --I wrapped with butcher paper vs. foil like Aaron Franklin and that bark is amazing.

The cool thing is, I can go back to the Mini project I started before breakup this spring, but that's another thread.

I was wondering if the counter weights were going to clear the box when I first saw the picture.

Thanks Big T, a really big chunk of time on the storage box project was fit and re-fit and fit again before I struck that final arc I can tell you. I probably should have just shortened the counterweights and attached the wood box to the CC, but I've grown attached to the look.

Nice work! I would weld a piece of 4x4 angle to the front of the FB just behind the fenders and it would provide a sturdy mount for the lights. You may still need reflectors on the door of the FB.
