Hello from Boise, Idaho

Post by tbakko » July 19th, 2013, 8:36 am

Hello, my name is Tom and I am from Boise, Idaho. I am getting ready to build a smoker using a 275 gal fuel oil tank, an old air tight wood stove and a 2 wheel utility trailer.I have been smoking foods for several years now, first on a home made propane smoker then on a Bradley Original electric, and lately on a UDS. I am going to build this new smoker just because I can & I need a new project to keep me busy, plus I want to try smoking with a stick burner. I am open to any ideas anyone may have to offer, and I am looking for plans for the build. I will put up pictures of the progress to date, soon, which is only in the material gathering stage. I look forward to scanning all the post & looking at the pictures of all your smokers.

Welcome tbakko! :welcome:

Have you run the numbers on your components yet?
If not then run your fuel tank dimensions and your wood stove dimensions through the pit calc now to make sure you have a reasonable match. It'll save you a lot of headache trying to get them together later on.

I think the pit calc is under RF smoker department on here.

And pics would be nice… just sayin' :D

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D
Current smokers: Egor (trailered RF) and Easybake (tabletop pellet drive)

Welcome Tom,

I see you are looking for plans, http://smokerplans.net/ is the place we recommend for that. Frank Cox is the guy, and he will be there for you as "tech support" as well. We look forward to helping you, and watching your progress.

I went through the calcs on the FB & came up with about 18720 and the recommended size is 20790, do you think this going to be a problem or is it close enough that this will work?

Welcome Tom.
You are going to want your FB to be about 105% of the recommended size. This gives you a little room when it comes to controlling your cooker. Going with a FB smaller than recommended, could definitely cause you some problems.

Welcome!

90% isn't bad, but since you haven't started yet I would seriously look for a FB which is slightly oversize. I have 275 gallon fuel tank like you were talking about and went through three FBs before I finally found the pit calc and got it right. The difference is amazing.

The boys are right, go bigger if you can. You will be glad you did.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.
