SETX Rookie

Post by Doc5168 » January 15th, 2016, 6:49 pm

Hi all, I'm new to the sport of Smokin'

A brisket lover, I grew up near Longview, TX where I was raised on Bodacious Barbecue. It has set the standard for my expectations of BBQ. I now live in Houston area & have not found a smokehouse to compete.

Either way, it has become my quest to fab my own smoker & work to equal Bodacious' flavor. This may be a tall order, but possessing the tools, skills, materials & now time to build I can put the knowledge & insight this group & my cousin have shared to work. Using the calculator I've decided to go with a (3/16" thick) 24x24x48" rect chamber with a 20x20x24" offset firebox insulated in a free 1/8" thick 24x24x24" box.

Once I figure out how to post photos from my phone to the forum I'll start a thread chronicling my first build.

Welcome to the crew!

Are you sure you want an 1/8" thick FB?

The 1/8" box will be outer shell of insulated box with the inside being 3/16".

Ok, are you having a problem with 1/4" for the FB? I would at least use 1/4" for the top of the FB and taking it into the CC as the BP. But you can do it your way. I have seen FBs warped and I believe 1/4" is where that seems to stop. I'm not trying to be a stick in the mud, just trying to share experiences.

I had a job requiring 3/16 & Just using what I've got. Guess I could laminate the 3/16 & 1/8" on the top or add angle as stiffeners as well.

You could add stiffeners, that would probably be ok.
