newbie smoker

Post by maccas66 » December 22nd, 2011, 10:32 pm

Yeah G`day!, I`m from Penrith west of Sydney, and have been lurking around for a couple of days now, and decided to join!.
I was put on to this site by a mate that is a member here, I am hoping to build a reverse flow smoker out of a LPG tank I got off a early 70`s F100
I only got it yesterday and I`m still washing it out, that is one scary thing to do!, anyhow I`m sure I`ll have heaps of questions once I get started, here`s a pic
of the tank and Merry Christmas everyone!, Oh yeah!, the tank is 800mm X 500mmd and I believe it holds 140ltr`s

This will help and the fender on that Ford looks to be in pretty nice shape for a late 60's early 70's.

There can be a trailer smoking just about any weekend in KC, just tell me when to light er up.

There's a big one in the middle of Sept. Weekend before the royal, 2 day cook. Frank DC and Bubba came up for it last year.
I will do that one again, may have to count penny's but I'm doing it. May be the only one I get to cook in this year.

Are the smoking franks doing the royal this year?
I'll come hang out and stir the pot, I mean the fire.

Right now I use cheap candy thermos. Of course I use my maveric thermos as well, the cheap ones are on my doors for gereral readings.

I will check this week and see if I can find out when the royal is gonna be. A good oll OBR cook would be a blast. If Bubbas gonna be there too, we will team up and make sure you remember to eat.

I put the baffle plate about an inch above the top of the firebox. you could use the top of the firebox for part of your BP but it will have a hot spot on that end.

Thanks Frank, I thought that may be the case, when I put my firebox/cook chamber dampner in, I did it so the dampner plate goes into the fire box and not CChamber, the way I saw it!, it would deflect the heat passed a part of the baffle if it went in the CC. I`ll try and get some up to date pic`s posted, I know I like to see things as much as reading them, no more than reading them!!

OK I `ve been working on the fire box the last two weeks, I`ll show my progress

Image

Image

this is my first idea for the dampener between the firebox and the cooking chamber,

Image

Image

I cut the top weld off the handle support and welded a flat plate on it so I can unbolt it all from the door if I need to!

it went insde the C/chamber, but I thought that it might deflect some of the heat past part of the baffle
I have since changed it to swing intop the firebox, I must have forgot to take some pic`s as the door has appeared.

Image

I went for the air inlet to be in the door so the air has to pass the fire to get to the C/ C, seemed to make sence to me anyhow!

Image

Image

we`ve got an old plow in the front yard and the missus hates it!, so I thought what can I use of it!
this looked promising!

Image

Image

did I tell you all I like the over engineered look! :D , tell me if you think I went over board :-s

Image

Image

Image

now I have to work out some kind of latch for the door to suite the rest of the door!
The tab at the bottom of the fire box openeing is a slid to help lift the door into the right spot when closed, it has to be trimmed yet!

That is one sweet draft control! :kewl:
Now find a small boiler valve wheel to keep that overdesigned look going. (look in "verticle smokers" I think for an example)
Then make a 3-way mount for it on the front of the door like a safe so you turn the wheel and it shoves the three tabs into slots around the door...
Warning - when you're done, the door will weigh more than the rest of the smoker - but oh the chicks will be following you everywhere... so cool!
=))
