FNG from IN

Post by pxc » January 26th, 2018, 9:34 am

Hi there folks. I'm new to the site and figured I'd introduce myself and this seems to be the space for that.

I started smoking on a Weber kettle in 2010. Tried making my own version of one of those smoker inserts where it gathers the charcoal and wood chunks on one side and you put the meat on the other. I tried spare ribs and they came out horrible, tough and too salty. My family was kind about it but they were NOT good. I kept at it and got a little better, then built a UDS and got a lot better. It helps those things are so easy to control if you build them the right way.

I like trying new things and learning, and just about everything I've tried and succeeded at I've studied using internet articles, forums, and Youtube. I'm approaching the next step in my BBQ journey where I want and need to be able to cook for larger groups of people, and the UDS just doesn't have the capacity. While I'd love a Stumps, Lang, Yoder, etc, the budget isn't there. And so I'd like to learn more about welding and hopefully build my own cooker once I have the skills to tackle such a project. That's why I'm here, to learn and get ideas from you all, and hopefully give back once I have something worth giving!

This looks like a great site, I'm looking forward to speaking w/you all and learning from you.

Paul

Welcome,

That is why I joined the group as well, but I am currently building my UDS. I'm welding in the pieces vs. using screws to get some additional practice in.

Welcome...you are in the right spot.

Those big name smokers are great in their own rights but many of the guys here have customized rigs that will easily compare or surpass the big ones.

Learning generally boils down to "Repetition or the avoidance of pain", some people learn by doing, some by watching and some just have to pee on the electric fence.

Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. Henry Ford

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone. I've been doing lots of reading and my next big purchase may be a local welding class. A Stumps-style GF seems like the way I'd want to go, but I don't want to outsource the fabrication. What a great site.

No, but thank you for yours. FNG was just what we called the new guy in the warehouse I used to work in. I was the FNG til the next new guy came in. Didn't know it was Army lingo but that makes sense given who I was working with. I imagine welding on a thin metal barrel is a challenge.

PXC, Thanks.. But in my time, I never had to deal with anything that today's Hero's had to over the past decade.

Welding on a barrel when you're a novice is challenging. I have burnt a few holes through it! Learning patience the hard way!
