Newbie from so-cal

Post by jose-da-weldr » February 5th, 2018, 9:56 pm

Hey guys, my name is Jose and I am from Wasco, Ca. I am a welder/fabricator for an oilfield contractor here in Ca., and have experience in wire feed, and stick welding. I'm starting a new build and I want to get your guy's input on what i have. I found a scrap piece of 18 inch pipe 3/8ths of an inch thick and cut it down to 36 inches long, and a scrap piece of 16 inch pipe 3/8ths of an inch thick, which I haven't cut to length just yet. I have some end caps that I found and cut for the cook chamber prep for install. My questions are;
1. should I cut the c/c door first, or weld the end caps first?
2. I ran the specs through the calc. and came up with 16x16 f/b would give me 105% ratio, is that enough or should I go bigger like 16x18 f/b?
3. should I go with a 3 inch exhaust at 27 inches, or 4 inch at 13 inches?
4. would r/f or traditional offset be best?

Let me know what you guys think, your info would be greatly appreciated. I'll post the build in the proper section. Thanks

Welcome aboard!! I prefer the RF over a traditional offset because of the even temperatures vs the hotter temp zones in the traditional. I try to keep the stack above eye level to keep the smoke out of my face so I would go with the taller stack. The 105% ratio is right on the money so I wouldn't change that. You can go either way with cutting the door, I wouldn't be worried about 3/8'' x 18'' pipe distorting when you cut it.

Big T answered your questions right on the money.

Something to consider, till you put in the baffle plate it it is going to be super tight to fit 2 shelves in an 18 inch pipe. If your cooking needs only require 1, it is a wonderful size for a patio smoker. A second rack would only be about 8-10 inches wide and give you spacing of 4 inches max---great for ribs tho so I'd still put a slide in just in case.
