New Member - Planning new build

Post by eclark53520 » October 16th, 2018, 12:34 pm

Hey everybody, glad to be here.

I have plans drawn up to build a 120 gallon RF out of an old propane tank. At the moment, I'm just learning as much as I can. The project will either start this winter, or early next spring. Just depends on when I can get my hands on the equipment and materials.

I was thinking about getting a 250g tank and cutting an end off to use as the fire box, but a 48" smoker body and an 18" long fire box is going to look odd IMO and I'm not sure it would draft well. Not to mention all the curved cuts would be a pain too. So my plans now are 120g tank, square firebox built out of .250 plate and mounted on whatever cheap trailer I can find on craigslist over the winter.

I'll be posting pictures of my progress once it starts up!

EDIT: Guess this should have went in the 'introduce yourself' forum....Saw the 'Welcome!' title and headed in without looking around much more than that....

Welcome, looking forward to seeing your build. Good choice to go with the square firebox. Again welcome.

Welcome to the crew.

Sounds like it will be a great build. The square firebox is a good choice and will save you headaches along the way. Do your homework before you start and you will have an easier build. As for making it draft correctly check the calculator on this forum. You can also get plans for your build for a small fee if you prefer someone else works out the details

Thanks for the warm welcome, Everyone!

I'll definitely be asking some questions...right now I'm just trying to soak up as much information as I can. I've been running numbers on the calculators like crazy lately and even dusting off some of the drafting skills(from highschool...so not great lol) drawing some scale prints.

Also, thanks for the thread move! My apologies.
