Hello from Texas

Post by headhunter 1 » July 18th, 2020, 10:31 am

Hello, my name is Dwayne, new guy here..
Just found the site this week when I was looking for ideas for a smoker I started building and found alot of useful info..

I don't consider myself a welder but I do enjoy building and fabing all kinds of things from hunting equipment, bumpers, furniture and now want to do a couple of smokers..

I have read a lot of good things about the UDS type smokers ,so I wanted to start small and build one.

So instead of using a drum, I decided to use a water pressure tank that I had laying around , it was in good shape and pretty solid except for one rust spot..

I plan on building as much as I can and welding everything to the tank since it is thick enough..

Welcome.

Nice start on a project. Should work out pretty nice as a uds. Only problem I can see is the diameter is probably different than a standard drum and any of the standard available products like lids and grates may not be able to be used. This may not be an issue and those parts can definitely be built from scratch if you have the ambition.

Keep us tuned in and let us know how we can help.

I do plan on making my own grates and using the top of the tank for a lid , probably on a hinge

Have a question about intake, do y'all think I could get away with one 2in. Or do y'all recommend 2?
Thanks for any help

Typically 2 so you have options on a windy day.

I'm looking at your tank and it looks like it might make a good meat missile.

Welcome aboard! I think your single intake will be fine since it's on the bottom. There's one of the pro builders that have a single intake on the bottom of theirs but I'm not sure of the size. You should start a build thread and someone can move all of your pictures over there.

We always recommend two for an offset build but just one should be fine for a uds. The air is pulled down to the bottom thru an intake tube so no real affect of the wind blowing directly into the firebox. You just need to size it properly and I would say 2” is fine. Also remember that valves are expensive....expect sticker shock on a 2” brass ball-valve.
