(May 2012 Winner!) Price you pay for not using guards

Post by Brewery » May 19th, 2012, 10:13 pm

I've never used guards while using a cutoff wheel on my 4" grinder... I've seen some really bad cuts from buddies bit using their guard on a 7" grinder but the little guy got me this eve.... I'll spare y'all my fat belly pics but here's where it bounced off after my my stomach and chest .... That or it was several different pieces

Finger is just a scratch. Belly is more of a burn than anything, arm on the other hand.... Well when the mrs. Gets home from her concert I'm sure she'll want me to go visit the doc for a stitch or five. I'm just happy I had my hood on, can't imagine what it wouldve done to my already beat up face without it! I grew up watching pops cut everything with cut off wheels then spent 8 yrs building pre-50's cars with the owner of honest Charlie's speed shop in Chattanooga Tennessee and I've never had one "aim" at me

I'll keep wearing a hood as always but its hard to wear sleeves when its hot and humidity is at 93% another 30 days or so and it'll be 110 in the shade with nearly 95% humidity ...

Glad it didn`t bite to hard Brew!, you don`t need long sleeves when your using the safety guard on a grinder! :rulz:

I knew a guy that had to hold the side of his mouth closed with his fingers while he ate!, a 9" grinder wheel exploded in his face, he wasn`t real good to look at either!

I've posted this befor on another topic. On a job I was on the prime contractor had a saefty meeting and stated that anyone using a cutoff wheel as a polish wheel or using it the wrong way would be shown the gate. What they said brought this on was a feller on a different job site was doing a little polishing on a piece and the wheel came apart and hit him in the chest. Didn't stop there it also hit his heart and killed him. So what is better a little sweating and being able to sit at the dinner table with the family or taking a chance having a empty chair.

Dang brewery, you better be careful cause those "dogs will bite you" doesn't it make you mad especially when you do it to yourself. Glad it was no worse than it was though, just another battle scar and there will be more

One more thing brewery, i have preached this and I will again grinders are not made for cutoff wheels the rpms on grinders are different than on a metabo plus the metabos have a clutch in them that are specific for cutofff blades. I am not scolding you because in the past I have used grinders with cutoff wheels, but be careful they are not designed for that and wiil splode on you. Jest saying!!!!!! :exp: :exp:

That is news to me! I guess I never really thought about it, and whether the grinder had a too high of RPM. Live and learn...thanks for the info

I never heard this before! I will check it out! I seen a metabo for sale at the weld store the other day, guess I will be getting it. maybe that is why the metabo blades do not last well on my dewalt?!

First of all I'd like to thank my grinder, if it weren't for it and my flagrant disregard for safety I couldn't have ever made it happen :explode2:
