I really like your recessed thermometer. How did you do that?

I used a dimple die to punch out a hole. The punch also rolls the edge inward. I then just welded the punched out piece back into the now countersunk rolled edge.

Love the technique. Wish I could justify the cost of the punch tool. Some others suggested a 1/2 collar and I picked one up for $2. Gotta say though your recessed thermometer looks very legit.

Thanks. It was well worth it. Plus now I can do awesome smoked meats. This smoker works beautifully. So glad I went with these plans.

How's the powder coating holding up?
Talked to a powder coater locally about cost and his price was pretty reasonable. ..
Not sure how durable the plastic Finnish and heat would play nice together...

The coating around the firebox has darkened. There is hairline checking around the other areas that gets hotter than you would want to touch. You have to get in really close to see them but they are there. Other than that it is holding up nicely. I think the coating around the firebox will continue to get darker. I’m just not sure how dark it will get.

Bummer on the darkening...
Perhaps a piece of decorative diamond plate around/over area so it's not so unattractive. ...

It doesn’t look that bad. It looks kind of like darkening from smoke. So I can live with it.

Think of it as a smoke ring on your smoker... :D

Do you remember what you cost of goods was? I know the labor is priceless.

I figured with the powder coating included it cost me just over $2200.00. Plus towards the end of the build I was not looking for the best price for parts. I was just getting whatever was most convenient and quick to receive.

Love the turn out on your smoker.

What type and where did you purchase the installation you used?

And how much would you recommend buying. I seen you ran out part of the way through.

I'll be starting my mini build today.

How do you remove the drip tray if it has a ball valve attached? Do you unscrew the valve and lift up inside?

The drip tray just funnels to the drain valve. It is not attached to the valve.

Does the drip tray have a sleeve that goes into the valve spigot or does the grass just seep under the drip tray?

I used a dimple die to punch a hole that lines up with the valve.

Well I've got mine completed at last. I would post some pics but it's such a ballache to do that here as they have to be uploaded to a host first. Still, I cooked some baby backs at work for the guys and they loved them.

Congrats on finishing.

Pictures are actually pretty easy to load. You just have to use the ‘full editor & preview’ button then find the file on your computer and hit submit. Would be happy to walk you thru it if you need.
