Smoker Clones are your own version of a commercially available Smoker. Examples are Stumps, Jambo, Backwoods, or any other you want to try to copy.

Sorry, I don't know anything about them myself. It seems to me that, I can make any pit I want. And as long as I'm happy with it when I'm done then, it doesn't matter to me what the other guy has made, unless I can use a part of his to make mine better. Then I will borrow that info, all said I think we share our experiences to help each of us build the best we can in all types of smokers.

Having seen a few of these in action at comps, I can tell you that it's the design that is the secret to it's success. He builds them with an insulated firebox that looses next to no heat, and raises it high on the cooking chamber for the inlet. It is a very efficient design, as the one's I've seen burn only 6 to 8 pieces of wood for a 12 hour cook once it's preheated.

I cooked next to one at Loveland's comp 2 summers ago and I think CarolinaQue's interpretation is dead on.

And as mac said - they aint cheap and as rodcrafter pointed out - run whatcha brung if that's what makes you happy...

Nothing more gratifying than to see a good ole boy show up with a cardboard box and a 100 watt light bulb and kick everybody's A$$.... KNOW YOUR EQUIPMENT ... :D

okay I'll get off my soapbox now ....

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D

I agree Rick...it's about knowing your equipment. I've beat my share of people that have all kinds of fancy equipment, including Jambos...all with me using my home made smoker. It's about knowing your equipment and how to just plain cook...and a touch of luck at comps!

They are awesome looking cookers i have looked at them very close the ones I saw had prolly at least a 3000$ paint job on them. There is no doubt in my mind me and Tyler can build one as good if not better. The welds have been slicked off and body filler has been added to cover any grind marks. Might build one just cause I can, They are nice absolutely no Question about it........ But i am like Rick I like to see that old backyarder take em down at a comp and have seen it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ones I saw had no baffel plate just a regular offset, had a deflector going into the cook chamber

I think the unique feature of the Jambo is that is it a DOWN draft arrangement - that said I don't have a clue what down draft does for the operator or the food - but I'm willing to learn ... :-B

great thread guy's
I will tell you this- with any pit design there are a couple "laws of the pit" that will make you a true pit master. There are laws for the Pitmaster and the pit builder as well. these are some of the things that have led to many pit builders success.
  • Practice. run the pit the same exact way everytime and track what you do and the conditions you are cooking in
  • practice some more
  • don't over build your fire. the firebox is the size it needs to be not because it needs to be full of wood but because it needs that much air.
Same kind of scenario if you want to build award winning pits.... which I might add is why his pits are as good as they are
  • find your "tune" for your pit style
  • build 4 or 5 models of the same style pit
  • know how to cook successfully on your pit style
  • build each model EXACTLY the same as the first one
  • train your customers in the use of your pit style
  • listen to your customers- they will give you the best ideas... better than your own

What Frank said!

No the first half I agree with.
The second part makes perfect sense, but I have no experience to speak fron.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

The most important part of what frank said is where he says

Listen to your customers.

That is so so true. Thats where some of the best ideas come from.
