Inside Out Insulated Box Smoker Build

Post by SmokinHawgBBQ » June 15th, 2016, 10:26 am

I have a Mint shape, 24by24by48 Husky jobsite box I'm going to use for a build, so I'll be building it from the outside in, I want to be able to fit a full size chafing pan if needed,so the insulation will be 2 inch rockwool everywhere except the cook chamber door and backwall will be 1 inch rockwool for the extra depth needed for a chafing dish, had it hanging around and figured I could save a lot of time and cost on the build by using it, the box is 16 gauge which I would have used for the outer skin anyway. Still trying to decide on making it a straight flow through vertical like I've built before(although un insulated) or make it a Backwoods/Humphrey clone, I'd rather do a clone, but not sure of the specs for the intake and exhaust channels, Anybody have specs on those?

Seems like it would make a nice smoker. Are you planning on two doors?

Yes, going to have 2 doors, will be reverse flow, I ordered roxul insulation with the foil on both sides from ww Grainger, they are about 15 minutes from my shop, so i'll pick it up tomorrow, and get going on this thing. When I'm done I have a 5 ft wide by 5ft tall by 30 inch deep, double door jobbox I'm going to build inside out also.

Picked up my Insulation yesterday afternoon (has to go in first) Got the foilfaced roxul, worth the extra few bucks a sheet, no shipping charges cause I picked it up at my local graingers. Found 1/4 inch plate out of my cutoff stock in the height I wanted for the firebox, So when I get back from my checkup for my broken leg this afternoon I can get going on this, I'd like to use it for a comp in July, if Not the comp in August.

Started on the cabinet today, got the Firebox insulation, and a mounting rail for the firebox in, then tacked together the bottom and 3 sides of the firebox, I can slide it out in the morning to finish weld it, add the charcoal box tracks, and put the top of the firebox on on the welding bench where it is easier to work, then slide it back in and weld around the edges, and plug weld it to the back support rail through 5 one half inch holes I drilled in the back wall of the firebox.

Got to work on the box today, after tacking the firebox sides and bottom together inside the cabinet, I slid it out,and set it on the welding table to finish weld the seams, put in the charcoal box tracks, and weld the firebox top on the easy way on the bench, then built the charcoal box while on the bench. The completed firebox slid back into the cabinet, and gets welded around the cabinet opening flange, and plug welded to therail I mounted when I installed the firebox insulation. Then I mounted 3 angle iron rails that the cook chamber module will plug weld to. I will fit the 3 sides in the cabinet like I did with the firebox, and tack weld them, then slide it out to finish weld it and add the top plate. The 3 angle iron brackets also hold the top piece of insulation, and the side insulation in place. After welding it solid I'll slide it back in and weld it to the top of the firebox, and plug weld it to the 3 angle iron brackets, and around the flange. the ducting for the intake and exhaust will be added to the sidewalls and rear wall before putting them in the cabinet and tacking the walls together. The grate tracks will be mounted as a slide in module to weld in after the whole thing is sandblasted.

Thanks Guys, it's an easy build, because most of the welding can be done on the welding table after tacking the pieces together, then just slide the module back in and weld it to the rain gutter flange, and a few plug welds to the inside brackets, I made the 2 sidewalls with the heat and smoke transfer channels today, and cut the back cc wall I'll tack them together in the morning, and slide the cc out and finish weld it on the table also, then slide it back in and weld it around the rain gutter flange,3 brackets I put in yesterday, and to the top of the firebox. It's Getting heavy, most verticals are 7 gauge inside everywhere, the firebox is 3/16 and 1/4 inch plate, and the cook chamber panels and ducting is 1/8 inch plate, so it should hold heat good. I put another 1/4 inch plate above the charcoal box an inch below the top of the firebox to keep the high charcoal box heat away fom the top of the firebox. It's built from leftovers from other builds, only expence was insulation latches, and cooking grates.

Welded up the side panels with the heat and smoke channels today on the welding table, and slid them inside the box, tomorrow i'll make the rear panel with the exhaust channel, and the top of the cook chamber, and tack weld them to the side panels, i'll slide the cc module out and finish weld it on the welding table, then slide the module back into the cabinet and weld it in around the rain gutter flange of the cabinet, the top of the firebox, and plug weld the sides and back to the 3 brackets I welded in when insulating the cook chamber. After welding the cc to the firebox I can weld in the pieces that connect the sidewall channels to the holes cut in the top of the firebox.

entire cabinet insulated waiting to slide ccand firebox modules in after welding tire to cabinet
tacked the backwall of the cc and the top of the cc together, then slid it out to finish weld it on the welding table, also slid out the firebox for the last time to tack weld a few pieces of 1/4 inch plate to tap for mounting the latches,i'm going to put the wheels on while the cabinet is empty except for insulation.I've been keeping track, and so far have less than 30 hours into the build.
