A few questions:

1. Which design plan did you build on ... (link please)?
2. Will it give the same leak proof as an original?
3. Will the gravity feed give a full 8hr hands free smoking as the original?

I built the mini & it's definitely a sweet unit, except for adding a few chunks every now & then, I would go as far as to say it can be about 12-16hrs of hands free smoking.

But she's around 2" wider and 2" shallower in the cook chamber to get through garden gates easier (think this is the same as karatedoc's one)

As long as you weld it together and fit the doors properly with a good seal I see no reason why it would be as leak proof as an original.

I expect to get at least 8 hours from one fill of charcoal, hopefully more. The heatermeter and servo valve should ensure sleep at competitions in future!

Hi,
If you did the Gravity_Feed_Double_Pan_Standard_Door_28x25_CookingRacks from smoker plans.net then kindly let me have the conversions to metric. I got the 28x25 gravity feed from them. ...need help with the unit conversions

I only built the mini, but the best piece of advice I can give you with the conversion is to build the FB first & then build the frame & smoker around that. This way you have the best chance of getting everything to fit. Also, don't cut everything in one go before you start, make it as you go cause there will be stuff you need to convert but there just isn't anything in metricstock that will be the same.. i.e. The 1 1/2" frame box does not convert to metric well, 1 1/2" is 38mm & the closest metric is 40mm, that could be about 4-6mm out over the length of the smoker.

Ok, so not had chance to post an update until now, so this is a big one!

Door handle installed


Steve then painted her with some paint he had "lying around" (as you do). I hadn't seen the colour until he sent me some pics after she was painted (I did know it was going to be purple, but not the shade! When I walked in the workshop the following morning and saw her in all her glory I had a huge smile on my face!





Vent for air intake:


Handle installed (re-purposed grab handle for elderly/disabled)


Heatermeter installed (need to re-do the panel, as I didn't do the best job on this)


Fired up for seasoning!


Only ready to use the morning before I was due to cook for another buddies BBQ, so the first test cook was cooking for 30 people, no pressure!
Had a couple of issues, the pit probe died, causing her to hit 450F and the melt the servo for the air intake so I had to take the front panel off and operate the intake manually (although still fan assisted) this will be modified over the next couple of weeks, along with touching up the paint (it was still a little soft when we moved her, along with some parts where it gets very hot and the paint burned off. Might even throw some metal flake into some lacquer at this point!) Really impressed, never had a pit the was so controllable, especially for such a large beast. When she gets to temp, close the buttlerfly down to a minimal opening and the temperature just stops and stays there.


Cooked alot of food for a test run. 2 pork butts, 4 racks baby backs, 3 racks of St Louis spares (monster spares, took 8 hours and could have done with a little longer!), 2.5Lbs chicken wings, 3lbs Bacon cubes (cooked same as pork belly burnt ends, then served on skewers with black pudding, and caramelised apple. went down very well) and a big pot of pit beans (cooked the rib tips for these)



Will post some more updates as the mods are completed!

Wow, that is nice and good tucker too. I also like the bottle opener as well. Neat
The colour is certainly bright... you won't lose that in a hurry.
The rest of the build is very good and you got through the mandatory first Q pics.

The pit looks great and so does the Q !!! I can't tell for sure but those spares look like they have the belly still on them.

Mods have now been made.

Vent added to top of panel to allow some heat out from around raspberry pi



Air intake now enters from underneath, this keeps the servo outside. new damper made from ford focus throttle body







Stainless panel added around firebox door where paint burned off on first cook



new stainless steel panel made to replace old side panel with no-longer needed vent and my badly cut panel for heatermeter



Took her to her first comp last weekend, behaved faultlessly, temps rock solid all night. Not my best cook, didn't really have my game face on. off to the next one later today. Had one slight issue with my low quality welding however. Loaded her in the trailer at the workshop, drove home to load rest of gear where i discovered the welds on one of my wheel plates had let go and she'd fallen over in the trailer. once 2 of us had righted her (damn this thing is heavy!) wheel welded back on and all good. Steve trusted the rest of my welds so little we must be the only team ever to turn up to a BBQ comp with a welder just in case!

Oops, that's a pity about the wheel giving way.
The rest of the mods look nice. And yep, unless using high heat paint around the firebox, it is going to burn off. But a bit of stainless does the trick and also makes it look pretty flash as well. Nicely done.
