Gravity Feed Firebox Flange

Post by golson » January 7th, 2015, 11:27 am

Hey everyone. I got a set of Frank's plans for gravity feed and have a question on the firebox flange for top and bottom. Instead of building a flange plate for the firebox can't you just use the framing to act as the flange? I never built one of these so need more professional help here. I was thinking as long as the firebox is aligned square with the framing then I thought this would be the better way to go. Thanks

You know you can get one on one help from Frank by using his plans, right? He sometimes takes awhile to get a hold of but try calling or PM him he will help you.

Yea I just got a hold of Frank. Gave me some great information. He also referred me to Puff for other data for the build. So I am on track now and ready to start my build this spring.

Golson, anything I have done has been with the help of Frank and these guys here but if there is anything I can help shed light on, let me know. I have pictures of almost everything.

My gravity feed smoker is UNBELIEVABLE. Looking forward to seeing your build

Hey Puff I was talking to Frank about the flush door mounting you done on the cabinet. Do you have any more details or tips on this?

Let's make sure we are talking the same idea.....If your going to flush mount the door, you will need to mount the firebox flange inside the frame work so that when you add up the thickness of the frame of that door and the skins, you have the same setback of the firebox flange. As Frank may have mentioned, you can extend the size of your cooking racks since you are not eating up more interior space if you do the same for your cook chamber.

I did not flush mount the door, I used the outer skin of the smoker to act as the seal of all the doors after adding gasket material to the doors and before the hinges were in place. I can get a few pictures if you'd like. Essentially just add two inches extra square tube to the top and side so you will easily cover the opening and have room for a nice 1" wide Nomex adhesive gasket

The plan calls for fitting the frame inside but the extended door size overlaps the opening by 2" all around

Same for this and the top door as well. The toggle clamps and gasket are beautifully tight and secure
If you can see the fuel door on top, I did build an extension so that a puddle of rain water could not seep into the chute. The extra frame can act as a dam around the entrance of that chute. ( a Great recommendation of Nagaburns)

I did weld in some scraps to anchor any latch components I need to screw into instead of just the skins ....as it turned out, I only needed the center one for the refrigerator latch

this photo is if the frame lying on its side.

After all you guys have done with me... It would be a down right insult to not be a team player. By the way what color is our uniform? I look good in blue or red!

Well, I think it can be about any color, as long as you look good! But shirt and shoes are required. :welder:
