Stumps Clone Build for 2015

Post by SmokinDTown » January 24th, 2015, 1:20 pm

I have a couple of questions I would like to ask forum members who have started - completed Franks Clone. I just bought the prints. Excellent detail. So has anybody made up a materials list/cut sheet? I know I'm being lazy. Sorry, had to ask. Also, can ceramic isolation be substituted for the mineral wool from McMaster/Carr as called out in Frank's print? Finally: anything wrong with substituting steel sheet metal for the aluminum exterior skin ? Thanks for the help in advance.

Stumps Clone Build for 2015

Post by Tom_Heath » January 24th, 2015, 8:48 pm

Actually each page shows part a. Part b. So on. And dimensions are shown in the drawings.

But no there is no actual list typed out. We here at smoker builder try to keep cost affordable on plans so we made no list.

Just got off the phone with Frank. He lined me out on this build, helped save me a bunch of hours, even before I started! That's got to be the best customer service ever! Thank-you Frank, and forum members for all of the suggestions and all of the help. Having a good set of plans, with all of this help for $79? What a great deal!

Obviously none of you have ever sat in on a BTU session with Frank via phone or in person… It can be very exhausting… But maybe in a good way… LOL

Is there an answer to the question about using aluminum for this cooker as mentioned in the first post?

Aluminum for the outside skin is fine but not on any part of the inside or chute

Just came back from the steel store with a little less tubing than I need to complete the frame. I am thinking that the cut-offs I have, (1' and 1 1/2" tubing )can be substituted for the "internal tubing", as long as the chimney fits up correctly. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Chris

I finally got started on this project. Bought some tubing, cut it all up, and started welding.

Image

As I stated in my previous post, I shoulda bought 3 lengths of tubing! Oh well. I'll pick that up when I go to get the skins and firebox metal.
Image

I think when I do the next one, I'll "cut the line" when I hacksaw the tubing. Think I could make the finished dimensions near
perfect.

What gauge tubing is that? There are several areas that you can use the cut-offs. I used a few for my elevated rain dam, top door and my ash cleanout door. Instead of fitting the top door to the top skin, I framed it out of extra 1 1/2" so IF it is out in rain, the water can't just roll down the charcoal chute.

Hi Puff! Very nice looking smoker! I am going to buy another length of 2" square tubing next week. It's not that expensive. For my first build, I am going to follow the plans. Tho I do wonder about flush door vs. surface mount.
Regards,
Chris

I used the surface mount. If your using the original plan which shows the flush door, it will add a touch more interior space for slightly larger racks and the overlap is more forgiving when it comes to perfect or slightly perfect fit. Plus, using a self adhesive Nomex gasket seals so nicely. I used a refrigerator latch so just closing the door is great...no 3-way latches.

Nice going so far. Yes it is big and when you get the skins on...it gets bigger and heavier. The performance is spectacular. Do you know if you are including a rain dam ( for lack of another word). I raised the top door on 1.5" box tube so if it gets wet, the water won't just seep into the charcoal chute.
