Transfer tube

Post by Bmtnbiker128 » February 8th, 2016, 11:24 pm

I just purchased the mini GF plans and was looking through them. They look great!
I have a question about the transfer tube. Would it benefit any to put holes on the sides of it, starting with small holes next to the FB and than step them up in size going towards the other end of the CC? Just like the baffle plate mod.

I wouldn't add any holes to the transfer tube, I've heard that it works flawless as it is designed.

The reason I ask is I was looking at stumps smokers and his junior model has the circles like I was talking about on his transfer tube. And a couple of the guys in here have said that the temperature ranges from front to back a bit. So I was wondering if this would fix that issue.
I understand these gravity feds have proven themselves, that is the only reason I ask to see if it would make it better.

If you wanted to tune it in after you try it out , What would be easier, adding holes later or filling holes later?

There is two things I would like to change on mine.

One is a deflector deverting the drippings from the smoke stack to the back. I currently put a dish on the top rack to catch this but that cuts down on cooking space.

Second is making the grease deflector on the door fit a bit tighter to the door opening. I have grease running on to the bottom door seal.

Would it be worth moving the smoke stack to the opposite side of the cook chamber on the fire box / charcoal chute. Like one the stump stretch smoker.

It would be better for the dripping but I don't know if it would affect the performance. Maybe someone else has input on that.

I have the plans and I'm currently treasure hunting for material so I am by no means an expert, as far as the transfer tube I would be more inclined to follow the prints and if your not satisfied with the heat disapation try clamping flat bars on both vertical legs of the transfer tube with experimental hole patterns to see what happens.

The only reason I bring this up is just so we can have a more uniform heat throughout the whole cooking chamber.

I believe it already does a good job on that issue.

C'mon RC, if you're not tweaking you're not trying!

Of course they don't always work out.... Ask me how I know.
