Clone of a clone?

Post by shortlived » December 8th, 2016, 9:36 pm

I'm editing this to start my own build thread.

Firebox questions

I ended up getting a 10" tube for my box with an 8" tube for the chute. The 10" tube is about a half inch thick and was free so I'm going with that. How big should I make the transfer tube and how high up the firebox? The box is 12" tall. I have some 8" flat stock I was going to make the chute out of till I picked up the 8 inch tube. I was thinking I could use the flat stock for my transfer tube and also make it the bottom of my drip/water pan. Thoughts? Cooking area is 33"x22"x4 foot tall.

Fantastic stuff dude, gotta love a pile of steel waiting to become a sweet smoker. :kewl:

I can't see why not for the transfer tube but it might be a bit thick for the drip pan. This thing will be a monster & weigh heaps so anywhere you can save weight is a good thing.

I could also use some 14ga sheet wasn't sure how that would hold up right next the the firebox. I'm already thinking I'm going to put this pig on a small trailer harbor freight or northern tool

I used 16ga for the bottom/drip pan of my GF & it's fine, as long as everything is insulated you won't have a problem. :kewl:

Has anyone used the 7/16" silicon tadpole gasket for the cook chamber? It looks like the only one I can order in a 12'+ length from BBQ gaskets.com. has anyone just used the 1/8" thick self stick one? I hope to make my door tight enough but I'm not sure if I want to add a probe port or just run wires through the door

A few of the guys have used the self adhesive gasket on their RF smokers and they really liked it.

I have used fiberglass rope, but not tadpole. I used red rtv silicone to attach it. It was 1/2" it works real good. I also have used the flat 1/4"x3/4" self stick. That was good too

What about the chute and ash box? BBQ gasket includes the "fire black" as the best but it looks like it can only handle 800 degrees. That seems like it might be cutting it close there. But that is what is included in the kit for a gf on this site. Thoughts?

I used the self stick all round, just have to make sure you allow for the compression when you set the door gaps & it will be sweet. :kewl:

I tried the self stick and failed. That darn frank told me it was like mailing a letter. Lick it to activate the adhesive. That DID not work. Total failure.

If you apply without licking it everything will be good.

I gotta order hardware now, this is coming together quicker then expected. I only get a couple hours here and there to work on it. Thankfully my Dad has time when I'm gone.

Now that I stopped laughing ..... I had about half a season out of the peel & stick flat seal so I went back to the fire rope/silicone method. That method is still working several years later..... imho :D
