Expanded metal for Racks

Post by Eeny » May 3rd, 2017, 5:13 pm

Hi,
I'm converting the sizes in the plans to metric to order the parts for my build, but I'm struggling to find the specs for 3/4 x 911 expanded metal for the racks. Can anyone advise on the specs for this as I can't locate on google?

Would this be suitable?

EXP PS2073F - Expanded Metal
w 2440 Length mm
d 1220 Width mm
8.59 Weight Kg\m²
LW 42.93 Size of Aperture Length mm
SW 14.22 Size of Aperture Height mm
W 4.6 Size of Strand Width mm
T 2.69 Size of Strand Thickness mm

3/4'' is the size of the stamped out diamond on the shortest section and it's 9 gauge steel. There's been a few guys that converted the GF's to metric so they can tell you what they used.

I really don't think it is critical that the size of the opening in the expanded metal matches the plans exactly. Get whatever the local steel supplier has that is closest. It is after only to hold the meat being cooked/smoked. Just remember this is a bbq smoker not a NASA space probe.
Just make sure it is not too flimsy. As RC and FC will attest, it can never be too thick... :D
