Gaskets

Post by Buckskin » June 24th, 2015, 6:30 pm

Hello, I just purchased the gasket and latch kit for the Oklahoma Joe Highland, which box do I put the braided gasket on and do you have a recommendation as to where I should mount the latches. Thank you.

Did you check with the place you purchased them from? I guessing the gasket would be for the door on your cook chamber.

I just purchased them as well and the issue isn't so much where but how. The braid has no adhesive and attached documentation doesn't address what adhesive to use. Additionally, the latches included do not fit the Highland's cook chamber whatsover. The width of the latches is too wide, so only one set of screws would fit.

I purchased the baffle plates as well which are excellent, but the gasket kit is not worth the buy. One could find the adhesive backed gasket and high temperature silicone elsewhere instead of paying the $50 for the kit.

Latches on these grills are a little tough but can be done. They have to mount just on the outer edge, so that when they are toggle open the lid doesn't hit. see the pic below.

the cook chamber lid should use a LavaLock or FireBlack Gasket. The Firebox gasket should also go on the lid (braided). You can also do the joint between the firebox and the firebox two halves, as well as the access.

The lid/latch combo is critical and we see about 20% fuel efficiency and better control... there are kits starting at 24.99 up to 39.99 shipped. $49.99 gets you all black with fireblack and rtv adhesive to seal up cracks!
