Trailer rig FB/WC/GF modification

Post by Rodcrafter » January 6th, 2016, 9:44 pm

I'm sure you have to be confused by the title of this thread. This is the deal, when I made my smoker I didn't know about the "pit calc" until I was done. So the FB was a bit small for the rest of the rig. Then after I was here for a while I fell in love with the cabinet above the FB idea. And after going to the "Gathering" in MO, I really liked the GF cookers. So me being a problem child, I wanted it all. So after a couple of other projects I began to do it.

Here's the FB with a temporary 6" tube in the hole that will go into the WC.

Then the Fire Basket

Then the WC and married them together Image

Then the insulation and second plate

Making WC door tomorrow I already made the FB door, the ash box door and GF shoot door.

Making memories.

Someone's been busy, looks like you'll have plenty of capacity. I'm anxious to see this build in action, nice work!

What's the plan for the GF unit, are you going to enclose it, any insulation around it ?

Thanks guys, you made me laugh with that comment Pete.

I'm going to try and run it without insulating it. Down here I'm hoping I won't need to. I believe I will be able to preheat the steel with the FB below the cabinet. Then switch to the GF feature for my overnight cooks or while I'm busy at work. If that doesn't work the way I want it to, I will be able to cook on it like an UDS until I get it insulated.

The FB is made of 3 pieces 1/2" and 3 pieces of 3/8" but I didn't have enough of any of that steel to use in full pieces so I had to weld at least 2 pieces together to get each plate. That was a hassle but easier than buying 1/2" plate. I'll keep you updated as things come together.

This is going to replace the firebox on my trailer rig. It is already on the trailer. The axle and stuff should be in today to make it a 2 axle rig because I make stuff "so heavy". lol

You're right Pete, well here it is so far.

Remember there will be another axle, I have to cut this one loose and join the two together then weld it back on.

It looks awesome and well done. I've been following your build as I'm seriously thinking of build a GF cooker. Looking forward to see how it cooks.

Thanks fellas, I still have lots to do to this rig, but it is mobile and a cooking rascal. I cooked a couple packer briskets 2 Boston butts and 10# of chicken and only used about 1/8 the capacity. Love it

RC, I've been thinking quite a bit about how to handle shade/weather protection on my RF trailer rig. Being Alaskan guarantees low sun tolerance, and I fall into the additional 'freckle' category so shade matters.

I was curious how that corrugated sheet metal roofing is attached? I love the idea but am really curious about how it might behave at highway speeds?
