How big is your disk?

Post by Dirtytires » April 3rd, 2019, 10:58 pm

I have a 20 inch plow disk wok and run it on a built in burner on my outdoor kitchen. It works great for the family but I am finding that some bigger groups I’m cooking for need more space. I would like to go a little bigger but don’t want to have to buy and set-up a special burner each time I cook.

So, my question is how big is your disk and what do you fire it with?

Hahahaha... that's a leading question for sure.

Seriously tho guys, I am wondering how big a discada can be and still heat efficiently on a standard burner. I’m thinking in the 24-26 inch range but I’d love to hear what everyone is running out there.

I'm guessing everyone is probably using a discada that is working for them. So no need to make it bigger to see where the drop off point is.

Now here DT is your chance to do the scientific hard yards and make a a unit that you can change the disk to see where the drop off point is...

I think mine is 22in with a diving board. I actually think it is too big for just the family, but it works fine on a standard burner. Diving board could be a bit warmer maybe? h2orescuemedic made a big one from a shallow dished tank end and it is a beast. Maybe 26in range Too heavy for convenience, but he made his own stand and burner if I remember. It will cook a bunch of food.

I went to a high-end cook out where a guy used a 60 inch wok...had it hand hammered from a single piece of copper in Italy. He had to have a 5 ring burner custom made to run it. Figured he had 20 grand tied up in it so pretty much over kill for a home cook.....at leas for me! Took 4 people to maintain it but he served the absolute finest paella I’ve ever had.

My real question is not how big they are made but how big is too big for a typical back yard/portable burner. My guess is 22-26 is probably that point.

Thanks for the info....

I've build 4 from 22" discs, even with handles, feet and
1 1/4" lip they are light enough to easily handle.
My personal disc is 26" with handles, feet and lip it is nearly 1/2" thick. Cooks great but it's extremely heavy.
I really like the 22" size

Thanks for the response. I’m more interested in how well it heats up evenly using a standard burner.
