I've been creative again!

Post by Squiggle » September 29th, 2016, 6:26 am

So I've had this LPG tank sitting in the barn fully open & upside down for a while to air it out & make sure all the gas is out of it. While this was happening over the last few months, I've been thinking of what I can do with it, I was tossing up between an RF smoker & a grill, then I saw a guy had made I fire pit out of a smaller on by drilling holes around the bottom & cutting the top off about 2" below the handle ring & I thought I could do something similar with my tank, only I would take it up a notch.

Anyhoo, enough talk! Here is what I came up with. :kewl:

First I drilled holes in the bottom to let the fire breathe.
Image

Then I drilled some holes in what will be the back & cut a door.
Image

I cut off the handle at the top, cut a hole in the top & welded a 4" stainless pipe I had lying around for the stack
(Sorry, no pic of this one. :( )

I stuck a stencil on the front & cut it out by hand with my plasma cutter (love that machine!)
Image

I took the rest of the stencil off with a wire wheel.
Image

This is a full view, all I have left to do is weld on some hinges, a handle for the door, a grate for the fire to sit on & give it a coat of HT matte black to match the smoker & it's ready for the veranda.

Squiggle, that is sweet.
One of the better uses I've seen for the larger lpg tanks. Love the cutout. And yes, a plasma cutter is a wonderful machine.
Presumably it will be a log burner? How do you plan to get the ash out?
And presumably Origin will not want their tank back? :D

Thanks guys.

Hahaha, they won't know it's theirs once it's painted! It's out of date anyway, I scored it from the tip for $5. :kewl:

Yeah it's going to be a stick burner, the fire grate will be removable & then just scoop out the ash. :D

Come on Squiggle, where's your sense of adventure. Put a port on the bottom so you can plug the shopvac in and suck the ash out... once it is cool of course :D

Hahaha, it's a good idea but my "shop vac" is my air compressor, I just blow everything out of my work area, much quicker.

Very nice Jay. That is very flash mate. :kewl:

Don't suppose you have that pic lying around do you. I'm building a few firepits for my daughters wedding and that image would look good on one or two of the sides.

Squiggle that looks awesome cut out. I don't know how it will work as an UDS but you are the one who would be the right person to figure it out. I look forward to seeing what you do next. Thanks for being so adventurous.
