WHAT NOT TO DO!

Post by Miketheforester » April 6th, 2013, 8:52 am

So as I was building my smoker I did several things that seemed like a good idea and ended up being impossible to execute or just plain old bad ideas. I thought it would be fun and handy for everyone to have a thread that shares all of the foul-ups we have had in execution and ideology. My question is: Does anyone else want to do this too, because I don't have enough ideas and experience to fill this out myself?

Well I can tell you that from experience… If you don't change your mind at least six times during the build that you're not doing it right… So don't have your mind set in stone as far as what you want to do be flexible!

Yes I can contribute. I am full of bad ideas. =))

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

Boy, this sounds like a thread that will be very therapeutic. It should be fun to read.

I'm starting a build tomorrow so I'm sure I'll have something to add but this is kinda "Q" related anyway ...

Hi! My name is Rick and I'm a "Q"aholic.

(everybody) "HI RICK!

It has been 74 minutes since my last bad idea....

Last night I prepped/seasoned 4 large ziplock bags full of rib tips to cook this afternoon but just as I was about to put them on the easybake the phone rang.

Seems a buddy of mine was taken to the hospital and I may have to leave suddenly to help with things at his house. The wife's at work so I wanted to stay handy by the phone until I hear something so I decided to stick the rib tips in the oven instead so I could just turn it off and dash if need be. I just don't like leaving a hot smoker unattended.... funny that way.

Well the foil pouches I made to put the rib tips in apparently weren't sealed very well so I am now scrapping out the oven with everything I can find in the utility room.... :D

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D

Great....sounds like me "sealing" the bag full of marinade and a TriTip.....pay attention to "sealed".....hence the clean up in the fridge...

Air compressor tank. Not necessarily don't do, but be aware that there are issues that come with it.

AC tanks spring out of shape like crazy and warp if you do anything beyond tack weld them.

Don't leave AR Senior unattended with a set of "Rick" clamps and a working welder. They will become door closers before you return.

Funny part is that I have a visual of AR Sr doing something like this. LMAO

You could build a giant azz trailer and wait to move it until your buddy comes by with a heavy truck cause you just know for sure that theres a ton of tongue weight. Move it, unhook it.
And your buddy walks to the back and the front flies up in the air. I was a witness.

You can weld in tenny shoes and then limp for a week.

or

build a smoker that is only 1/16th of an inch shorter then the opening on the trailer.

there is many more to come

No way would I have waited until my smoker was completely finished to try it out, but... The rest of the time I have spent working on it makes me so hungry that I can't concentrate because the damn thing smells so good.

when welding on Bullet style hinges make 2 tack welds on each section.... 1 at the top of your proposed stich weld and 1 at the bottom of the proposed weld- Fail to follow this and eventually you will wind up cutting a perfectly good hinge off..... :oopssign:

WHAT NOT TO DO!

Post by KenV » April 10th, 2013, 5:06 pm

When using a 4' break and bending 16ga. 24"x24"x24" U shape that is 36" tall, DO NOT slide in from the back side for your final bend and pin yourself in the break....it's really hard to get out!

Yes, some of those things we do are very funny.... after. I think that it would be a great idea to start a thread of "What Not To Do" Each Sub-Topic should have the main componant you are refering to.... Like "FireBox Door". That way it would be easy to scroll and find when searching. If its going to be a Topic then we should think it out just like we do before a build. Thanks for letting me babble......

There probably could be a department for "Don't Do This!" - then post titled threads to it with the basic premise.... or not.

Just remember that when you put the stacks on you can still get the smoker out of the garage. :BDHorse:

Haha I keep forgetting about that one.

"hey old man, how we going to get the smoker out of here now?"

Classic.
