Very nice, no problem on the opening FC. When you get this rascal up to temp, you will have more than half that vent closed. And that is if you are only cooking in vertical portion. When running the whole thing you may not even open it at all.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks RC.

It just ticked me off (at myself)...I had it figured out and changed my mind. A 10x10 would have been plenty and it would all be symmetrical and would have allowed for an inch over lap and still open fully. It will work fine the way it is...heck if not told only few would ever even notice since it has the grease hood

Whoa! What a shame...all that work, all that hope to achieve a great smoker on the first try....so now what, is it all scrap?

:o

Ah...I know you have a decent sense of humor so Im just pulling your leg ... You are so fine with this and as RC said it might not be even half open.. When is the painting? Still black, look at some of the automotive engine paint if you looking for something different in color. http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/flameproof/

Reason I say so.... I tried like crazy to be sure my first smoker was operating perfectly and agonized over the exacting measurements. When I tested the "S" out of it and it performed so well...I really wanted to celebrate its success without the "boring black" as you mentioned...So now, it boring black with silver doors.

My Gravity feed however is FIRE engine red !

I like "boring black" but with chrome and/or brushed stainless complements!

As Don Williams sang...coffee black...

The build has been at a halt for going on 3 weeks... Like I said in another thread...WORK!

I did look at some wheels. I got some new tires for my company truck last week at a local tire store that we do all of our company business with. I looked at the wheels they had. He gave me a pretty good deal on either of these wheels and would give me the tires.

My big expenses remaining are wheels, tires, axles and steel for the trailer. I have bought temp gauges, spring handles and some hinges.

Start writing an instruction manual so future generations will have a clue without scratching their heads

Making a lil progress this week.

I have a question or I'm asking for suggestions. Exhaust stack for WC/VC...reminder CC exhaust is 10"... I have some 8" available also 6 and 4. I'm leaning towards the 8 because of the 10. Height to be even with the 10" is 14"s. I realize 8 is overkill. But I like the potential look but I want to be practical.
Any advice?

A stack is not required for performance on a vertical cooker so I would use whatever I needed to achieve the look I was going for. jm2cw

I personally wouldn't go more than 6", and that only for aesthetics. I would then have a damper on it so I could choke it down to about a 2" while running.

That's what I was thinking...I can choke it down with a damper. I'm gonna offset it like the 10". Center it high as possible on one side.

Building a Cooker from a Propane Tank

Post by forty_creek » April 28th, 2015, 9:47 pm

Making some progress. Have the WB/VC and FB framed out for insulation and the outer skins prepped for all but the doors. Pics are kinda boring and really do not do the work justice. But I'm back on track.
No turkey last week. One customer got a bird. The bird literally ran straight at him. He had gotten in a deer stand to get out of the rain. It was frustrating birds weren't working at all. Setup and deer hunted em. I guessed wrong every hunt. Saw plenty of birds just no luck. Season is really to late. Hens are nesting. Toms aren't interested in another hen. But it beat the hell out of work. Had some good food from ribs, steaks, crawfish and shrimp, hamburgers, breakfast burritos, fresh made pico and avacados... and great fellowship with a lot of great guys. Did catch a mess of fish Image that's my son shootin the fish Image
Back on cooker tomorrow. Will get some pics up when progress shows

Sent them all home w/ our quest. Had a total of four 150qt coolers full of crappie and cats thru out the week. Only fished a few days of the week. If it rained you needed to drop a hook. We ran yoyo's also from the dock and in the lake.

Wow...I've not seen a catch like that since Coral Gables, FL in 1984... As for turkeys...you can sit on the back deck with a nice beverage and they will stroll by in flocks of 20-30 eventually

I miss our lake house. Its under construction, so we are staying away...but man the fishing off the dock there is second to none. Ive had 3 day weekends where I'll clean over 120 crappie, 10 large mouth, and 5 20+ blues. When you have the rest the electric filete knife cause its too hot....well you know you are sittin pretty.

Building a Cooker from a Propane Tank

Post by forty_creek » July 7th, 2015, 12:40 am

Making some progress. Have all but one rack tacked out. Hopefully by the end of next week I will be fabbing the doors.

Coming together. Took the braces out of the CC after welding in the rails. The top drawed down about 3/16's of an inch. Gonna porta power it out and weld a brace to hopefully keep it true. It happened over the large section of the CC.
