what's a fair price ?

Post by Big T » November 19th, 2013, 7:32 pm

:help:
I had a friend lined up to blast my tank for free and now he doesn't know when he can get to it. I'm trying to get an idea of what it cost to blast a tank so I don't get hosed. My rig is 25''x 66'' including my FB, I ran my CC numbers through a calculator and it comes out to 105 gallons just so you have a size to reference it .

It really depends on the type of media they are using. Soda is the most expensive, silica is the cheapest.

Thanks guys, I had a hard time finding someone to blast it, there are a lot of blasting companies in the phonebook but they aren't interested in small jobs. I found a guy that said he would do inside, outside and my trailer for $200 and he could do it tomorrow. I would like to shop it around but I'm ready to finish it up and I only have about $50 in materials so I guess I can't complain too much.

Harbor Freight's biggest pressure pot (110 lbs) is only $134. A 100# bag of industrial quartz is less than $10 and will go quite a ways.

I borrowed a friends blasting pot from '' that place'' and we couldn't get it to spray a consistent pattern, it kept clogging or spraying a big wad . I wasted a $35 bag of black beauty and didn't accomplish anything. I figured at the rate we were going that it would only cost about a $1000 and take about 2 straight weeks to finish. I'm sure other people have different results but I'll never use one of those blasters again.

I've been using one of those HF pots for over 10 years and love it!! My local building supply company sells 100 lbs bags of quartz for $6.99. I blast everything!!

You do need to screen the material as you load it so it won't clog up. Most important is to have enough air, that makes up for a lot of stuff.

It could've been the material that we were using but the problem seemed to be the small diameter of the fitting on the bottom of the tank and the small hose coming off of it. The blasting compound was uniform in size and there was no moisture present. I tried changing the air pressure from the min to the max in small increments with the same results. I picked it up from the blaster today and I don't think I could've achieved the same results with the small unit. I'm not doubting that others have good results with them I just couldn't figure it out, maybe I just gave up too soon.

How big of a compressor did you have hooked to it. I have a 6hp 80 gallon and it has a hard time keeping up.

I was using it at work and we have a dual compressor set up. I'm not sure what size they are but I'd say they are at least 150 gallons each. I think the material that we were using wasn't small enough for the largest nozzle that came with the blaster but that's what was recommended by a few different people. Most of the places around here have different types of sand for sale but the reviews online gave low reviews. I thought about buying a different type of material but I didn't want to invest more money and have the same results. If there's any tips you could give me I'd appreciate it, I've got to finish my trailer and most of my material is rusty.

There's always naval jelly. Not as quick but certainly cheaper. :D

You definitely have a big enough compressor. I would go with CHEAP silica sand. My pot has 3 valves on it. One on the air inlet which I keep wide open. Another that in a hose that runs from the top of the air inlet down to the bottom of the tank down to the bottom of the tank and connects to the blast hose, leave it wide open. The third is on the bottom of the tank and it also hooks in to the blast hose. This is the one that I adjust to control how much sand I'm shooting. I have this one only open 25% or less.
Let me know if this helps.

I've heard in the past that using Silica sand can have adverse health consequences, is that correct?

Thanks CRS, I'll give it a try sometime soon and let you know how it works out. Gizmo, I've never used naval jelly(sounds like something from a belly button) but I think it would take a good bit to cover the stuff I have left to do.

Prolly do a 500 gallon cooker for 4 bucks worth of navel jelly. Just brush it on like a bad paint job. Go have lunch and come back and hose it off. :D

It'd take me a good month to dig enough jelly out of my navel to cover a 500 gallon cooker. Is this something that can be purchased somewhere? Like maybe Craigslist? I see women selling breast milk so maybe???

Hmmm... another side line business opportunity.

I'll have to check into that Gizmo, I've got a few places that the blaster couldn't reach. I done a quick search online and the containers I found were just a few ounces and cost about $5 to $10 each. Mmmmm I'm gonna pass on the naval jelly from CL, just doesn't seem like a good idea.

YES , silica can kill you but slowly it's called silicosis, look it up and use protection, and while you are blasting too. lol
