Casters, which ones and where to buy?

Post by mag1 » February 19th, 2014, 11:19 pm

Trying to source casters for a build, will need to hold about 250-350lbs. Would like them to roll on grass and be able to withstand cold winters outside. Was thinking of 2 8" wheels on one end, but need swivel ones on the other. Any suggestions? Thanks. Not to expensive.

Check out Orvis's wheels. "Taking the plunge…" is the original thread but he was built about the same time as "Egor" so those 2 thread names in the RF section have the pics. I think those were 8" swivel casters and fixed 10" - both pneumatic and designed to handle grass. I think Pesh had about $120 in the set from our local farm store. Balance is important so do you homework to get the big ones to carry around 85% of the load and it's will be very easy to move without being "tipsy" :D

I agree the balance is where it is at. The casters don't work very well in grass until they are very large. So what I do is put straight wheels on the back that will handle 85% of the load then I carry the other end as I move it. This also allows me to make the legs that have no wheels to have adjustable bolts to level with. I'll post some pics in a few days of the one I'm making now that is like that.

Is it normal for one testicle to be larger than the other two?

A word of caution.
Sometimes buying local can save your bacon. This could be one of those times.

Since these castors (especially the lower-priced ones) are mass produced and only randomly checked for quality control, you can end up with a castor with a bearing problem. One of the 4 wheel bearings on Orvis's was off and Pesh had to hand grind the axle to fit it - very close to returning it - which at least was a very realistic option since it was a bought locally ….. just sayin' :D
