Lifting Smoker

Post by wbegg » July 23rd, 2018, 2:19 pm

getting ready to paint my mini, and would like to know if anyone here has used an engine hoist (cherry picker) with good results (i need to lay it down to paint the bottom). Harbor Freight has a pretty good deal on 1 ton and 2 tons cranes, so thinking of going that route before I destroy my back.

I do plan on building the double pan in the future, so it won't be a one use item.

An engine hoist is a great tool to have and will work well. Just make sure you rig it properly.

I’d buy the 2 ton for the extra(reach) length and higher lift of the boom on it

Be sure to only use the sides, to keep off the door

I welded a short length of chain to a 12" chunk of flat steel and dropped it through the chimney to lift mine. It worked good good for me...Image

But you do have a point.

Will, go big or go home. Get the 2 ton. If you go heavy on the skin on the double pan, you *WILL* want the 2 ton.

Yep get the 2 ton, if you are going to build a DP you'll be glad you did... =))

On my DP I welded 4 industrial eye bolts to the top of the unit through the outer steel sheet and also through the tube frame. I welded a nut on the underside of the tube. This made lifting it fairly easy and made getting it into the truck possible without a cast of thousands. Also helped with securing tie-downs when moving it on road.

Remember that the weight rating is with the arm fully retracted. With the arm fully extended, it's only about 25%, so a 4,000 lb rated shop crane at full extension is only rated at 1,000 lbs.
