Western Lump Charcoal at Walmart

Post by Mo Smoke » August 23rd, 2018, 9:38 pm

Saw this on sale at Wally World. 30lb bag of Lump charcoal. Brand name is Western. Good price too. Got any in your area? Anybody tried it?

Bought a bag and cooked with it today. At 30lb for $8 it was worth a try. Burned hot and burned fast. And that was after catching a nice shower of rain before I lit it. Yeah i had to hit it with another shot of lighter fluid to get it started but once it did... had my temp gauge reading 450 plus and I only used a qtr it the bag and a small split.

Don't tell me you used lighter fluid in your smoker! I'm going to trust that was on a grill. lol

I just think it will leave the fuel smell in it .

I gotta admit. I’m not a purist. I do use lighter fluid. Not always, not a lot, but yeah I do. I let it burn off completely before any meat goes on. No racks inside during that time either. My cooker doesn’t smell like it at all and I have never tasted nor has anyone said that any of my food has a chemical taste. I am so critical of myself that I would never use it again if that ever happened. Plus I have compared cooking with and without and did not notice a difference. But just out of respect for you Rod, I’ll try to get an earlier start on my next cook so I have time to light up the old fashioned way !

Not much more than it sounds like, just wax over lint with a wick that lights easily & fast

Me, I use a good charcoal chimney, with a wire mesh bottom. Avoid a chimney with a stamped bottom, those don't have enough airflow. 1 full sheet of newsprint loosely crumpled below the wire mesh, a tablespoon of vegetable oil, fill the chimney up with as much as necessary, light, and in 15 minutes or so, I have a chimney full ready to go.

A sheet of newspaper works great all by itself. I have used torn up chunks of the box from soda or beer 12 pack also works great just takes a bit more work to get it started

Alright sounds good. I’ve used a chimney before but it just seemed so slow. In real time it’s prob no worse than waiting 10 mins or so before lighting charcoal after squirting LF on it. Do you dump lit coals on top of unlit coals or just fill a second chimney if u need more?

Actually, my wax cubes have no wick. It just lights the cube. Available at that big orange hardware store next to the gas grills. Just pop it out of the package and light it. No messy newspaper or oil needed.

We fill a chimney and put it on a fish burner for a few minutes...then let it set till the top coal starts to salt and pepper then dump it on unlit coal and let it roll!

Ok.. next cook it’s on....I noticed something else about cooking with the Western brand Lump. My burgers and chicken were a lot more Smokey than usual. Is that because I was cooking with Lump instead of charcoal?

Lump isn’t necessarily more smoky but it does impart a different flavor. Lump is real pieces of wood that has been run thru a kiln. Charcoal is pulverized kiln dried wood, coal dust, binders and whatever else compressed into a briquette.
