Thoughts on doors and racks?

Post by kylersk » October 3rd, 2018, 7:13 pm

I've seen the bottom rack level with the mid point of the smoke chamber with slide out.

I've also seen the bottom rack below the door and split in 2 racks for removal. And only the top rack could slide out as it was also narrower.

I've seen the doors start below top center a few inches and go below mid center.

I've seen the doors start at top center and go mid center.

Then I've seen them past top center and below mid center.

Uggh.. so many options.

What are your thoughts?

For doors on a round chamber I go top dead center and down to 2” past mid center.

For my grates I do 4” above baffle plate and middle between that grate and the top of the chamber on a 2 rack setup.

Ultimately its preference. I like cooking butts so I make sure my racks are sized for “Optimal Butt Placement” [emoji23]

My old smoker didn’t have sliding racks and never thought I would use them (but put them in anyway.) it is amazing how many times I slide my racks...especially the lower one. Will ever go back to a solid lower grate but it is a preference.

Also, in my opinion, a single door is easier to use.

The doors that are past top center and below mid center were most likely done that way to keep rain out of the cc.

That’s right it is to keep the rain out and 1” below center allows the bottom rack to be placed in the largest location in the CC. Slide out racks are the only way to go in my opinion. I slide mine (racks) all the time.

Making memories!
