Building my 2nd smoker out of 60 gallon compressor

Post by Tjam9 » January 29th, 2019, 1:05 am

Hi guys. Everybody on here was such a great help last time I build a smoker. I thought I would share my next build and maybe ask questions if they arise. Here are some pics.

My last design which works really good.

When you do the chimney length. Is the calculation based upon inside diameter of the pipe?

If I build two shelves in my smoker how far should I space between the first and second shelf?

I personally like to have 7''- 8'' between the bottom rack and the one above it because it allows you to cook larger cuts of meat on the bottom and other things above. Some guys put multiple guides in the CC and move the racks around depending on what they're cooking. There's really no wrong way to do it as long as you don't restrict your airflow so just do whatever works for you.

Thanks Big T. I really like the idea of mulitple guides. I definitely cook bigger cuts of meat so want room for sure.

Do you see anything wrong with doing something like this to help even out the heat on the bp. This was recommended on my last build. Someone called it a shadow plate. I just want to make sure it won’t interfere with the draft or any other unforeseen problems. Thanks. It is sitting appx 1/8” below bp.

How much heavier like 1/4”? How much lower? You don’t see any problem with the draft? Thanks.

1/4'' will be fine and about an inch lower than the baffle plate. I don't think it'll affect the draft.

Intake done. Would you recommend a bbq guru pit fan? Anyone used one before and think it’s worth it?

Baffle plate in place but not welded. Has anyone done a removable bp and is it better to weld it in or have it removable? My other build I welded it in and the only problem I can see so far, is that any grease that maybe underneath can’t be cleaned.

I’m following your build and attempting to copy it.
I started a thread asking about which tanks I should use.
If you wouldn’t mind please give it a look and recommendations.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

In addition to my questions above does anybody have pictures or ideas for ash pan or ash cleanup. Two ideas I had was a pullout drawer but thought it may not be possible on a round tank or I thought about using 4” sq tube to mount underneath the smoker and have a metal slide I can pull to dump the ash. Thoughts?

Something like either of these

How much space do you have under the charcoal basket? 2”larger that the area of the charcoal basket and 2” deep should be enough.

That’s plenty of room for the ash pan. Wide and thin is all you need.
And thank you for your help

Thinking about doing this so I can have a removable bp with a drain still attached. Hope it works.

A removeable baffle plate is a grease fire just waiting to happen. Weld that puppy in and don’t look back.

Also, a grease drain is overrated...skip it all-together.

Thank you for the advice. I decided against a removable bp after doing some more work on the smoker. It was more pain that it was worth. And your advice just confirmed it better to just weld it. Thank you.
