250 gallon RF temp controller

Post by Wcooke24 » February 10th, 2019, 9:34 am

I have a 250 gallon tank RF smoker that I built a couple of years ago. It works great, but my question is can I add a temp controller to it. If I have a smoke going and I have to leave to coach my sons baseball games I would like for my wife to be able to just add wood every so often and not have to worry about checking temps or adjusting vents. Thanks in advance, this forum has been great

On my Weber set up I have a BBQ Guru temp controller. They do make a larger more complex set up that I believe you can run multiple fans with. With a 250g I’m not sure what size fan you would need or how it would function in a RF. With my Weber I used the minion method with charcoal so in theory all the fuel I’ll need for my cook is already loaded in there. Where as that’s not really possible if you are using a stick burner.

I don't believe that it'll work on a stick burner. The algorithm isn't correct for burning wood and it would cause major temperature swings from what I've read.

Many have tried over the years but we have yet to hear of any success with a reverse flow.

Might be easier to just let your wife coach the game while you tend fire!

Let us know how that conversation went... =))

In theory once you have some practice with your pit you should be able to leave vents alone and just tell the wife to add one stick every so many minutes, but I like the idea of having the wife coach... is the pit mobile? Bring the pit to the game.

If it’s mounted on a trailer bring it to the game. You can feed your players and sell to the crowd all at the same time. If not, just tell your wife to add a split every hour or so to keep temps steady.
