So turns out, it may have been easier to put the holes in first lol.

I was concerned about the plates being cut by hand, with a grinder, so I thought I would weld it to a box, squared off and then I will have a square datum to work from.

This would have been fine, if my mag drill was up to the job. The clutch just slipped with the 4" hole saw. Rather than have a look a the clutch, I opted for sticking it in the mill. Which had its own problems. End it up canting the head over to 90 to get her done.

It is not so easy putting a big hole in 15mm plate.

None the less. I have the door notch.

2 more key notches to do, the air intake, and the riser notch. Few pictures of progress below:

Your gonna need a fork lift to move that sucker. Looking good though. Cant wait to see the final product.

I also am happy to delay the final thing, when the reason, is the money is being spent very well elsewhere.

Got some more done today, not working to a drawing, and making it up as I go along. Used to build like this all the time, it is fun, and gets stuff done quicky. Even if you do realise, it may have been better to do it this way around.

Got all the notches in now. The air in take is as per the calculators. It is intentially offset to one side, so I can have a sliding type, and needed space to loose the plate when the baffle was wide open.

As this firebox only takws up half the space. I will need a frame to come out so that it is support. I thought add a couple scaffold planks on the top, so i can have a small side table. Also useful for setting my electric griddle on, when i want to make burgers (burgers must be griddle, on flat top - thats a fact lol)

Few pictures of a table I made from scrap at work. I work for and oil and gas company, the feet is massive pipe clamp of a spool.

This is what I mean by scaffold planks for the top. This is what I used here.

Nice table. Would not be moving that to vacuum the carpet though.
That 15mm thick firebox must have been a real challenge to get up and around your mill table.
Perhaps with the mag drill and 15mm plate a few strategically drilled smaller holes on the perimeter of the holes might have made it a tad easier on it. Then again it was probably one too many visits to thick material with a large cutter for the clutch and it decided to take industrial action.

Spent the day working on the air intake damper. Took a long longer than I had hoped, milled a pocket out of some 10mm plate. There is a 5mm plate that slides inside.

Used an old water main stop cock for a handle, with a brass spacer.

Worked on the door today. Cut it out of 15mm road plate, and squared it of on the mill.

I notched some box section to fill the gap to allow the hinges to fit. I was going to cap them of, but I think it looks quite good open still. They are only tacked on so I can get a feel for it.

I intend to get the door latch finished next weekend, which will be driven of the ships wheel. Then I am going to weld everything.

After that it will be working on the frame work support and table top. So I can actually bolt it to the frame. I think I got about another 4 weekends of work to get her going.

Thanks, amazing what you can cobble together out of scrap.

I have borrowed a few parts I already bought for the new bbq, such as the hinges, but so far in, not spent a penny

While not at your level by any means I love to take scrap and make something out of it. Anyone can work with new stuff and use all the fancy tools to get it done. Making something from nothing with nothing is a challenge that I love.

Got the ships wheel on today, the latch, needs some more work, rounding the edges off to neaten it up. Also needs a couple stops for when it is on the locked position and when it is unlocked.

I decided to keep it simple and just have a rotating latch, when at the correct angle, it squeezes through the diagonal gap. I was going to make some linkages and have the latch slide, but felt that would take all weekend, and I am keen to get this smoking. It clamps down tight on the seal.

Made a couple of stops for the latch, out of some brass bar. Then I moved onto the task which I have been putting off.

Welding the plates out and grinding a radius. I am putting stringers down, as my welder wouldn't be powerful enough to wash a weld in there. I plan to go back over with the Tig after, and fill any little holes and blend in again.

This might take some time. Few pictures below.

Spent the last two weeks welding and grinding. Before I built the frame, in case I need to change anything, I fashioned it up today and tested it.

I am really pleased with it. Heats up almost instantly, holds temperature, responds well to the damper. So much easier than what I had been doing.

Put the wood in, and job done.

Now just need to progress with getting it done.

Pictures below showing the temp probes, at this time they where exactly the same across the smoke chamber. The iGrill still how about a 15 degree offset throughout - and the right probe usually sat fractionally higher, but by they probes it looked almost the same.

Very nice...good work! You are going to be using that smoker for a long time. I can't wait to see it all finished, but this temporary fix is going to be nice to use.
