also how would you insulate a cooking chamber I am 55 and want to build my last smoker using either large pipe or a 5oo gal propane tank will insulating a cooking chamber give any real advantage or just on paper just looking over ideas right now dont want it so heavy you cant pull it
Argolee if you live where you have real winters then insulation will save you some on your fuel bill - otherwise (and I can't believe I'm saying this) DC is right on the 1/4 inch wall - once you get that #$%@ hot it will go fine - getting there and staying there will take a little more fuel from what I've been told...
Edna's not insulated except the floor (to protect the table she's on) and the front (to make life more comfy for the cook) and she is only 14 guage single wall everywhere else - but most of my experience with her has been pellet drive and I don't have any complaints on how much pellets she uses...

Oh well, stick with quarter for the firebox, and the cook chamber and you should be fine. As Rick said if it is really cold where you are it may take more fuel, but it takes alot of fuel to equal the cost to double all the metal.
Just my .02!
BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.
I don't care what Frank says about you DC - I think you're alright!

WOW - haven't heard about F-Troop in a LONG time...
no - I just figure if they're not razzing me it's cause they don't like me ... at least that's what my mom said as she was spreading peanut butter all over me so the dog would PLAY with me... rough childhood....

I know what you are saying Rick, My mum did a similar thing for me!, she used to tie a lamb chop bone around my neck so the dog wouldn`t bite me!, not a good look!
