New member from Virginia

Post by Enrgizerbunny » April 28th, 2019, 12:16 pm

Hey guys. I arrived here after seeing a build for sale on CL saying they got plans from here.

I'm considering building a smoker to get what I want, but I'm not committed one way or the other.

:welcome: Welcome to the crew.

Welcome, they say the only way to get what you want is to do it yourself. Have you decided on a style smoker that you like?

I currently have a cheap grill with an offset box that can get the job done with some baffles out of aluminum chafing dish. But it functions plenty well as a charcoal grill. I want what I have, except better function as a smoker (heavier metal, sealed). However I'm finding this difficult to conceive. I'm considering an offset/reverse flow or a vertical. I want to be able to do brisket flats, more than one pork butt, 10lbs of chicken quarters, whole turkey, etc.

If a smoker/grill combo isn't realistic, then I'll be going with a vertical and buying a 22" kettle grill.

You will be much happier with a dedicated smoker and a separate grill

That's the conclusion I keep arriving at. My limited deck space means a vertical is probably my best option. Makes getting material easier too. I can order the sheets in the size I want.

Everyone who joins here wants a combination grill/smoker unit.....lol.

Really is that agrill and a smoker want 2 different environments to work well and they are polar opposites. You will be MUCH happier building one of each.
