I bought one several years ago thinking it would be pretty useful. Maybe it’s just the model I got but it has a great tendency to loose the ground connection every time the cable moves. Got tired of the aggravation so put the clamp back on.
I'm a bit confused.... the whole clamp dropped off the work piece, or you lost the electrical connection somehow?

Magnet holds just fine, problem is it provides poor conductivity from the lead to the workpiece. It uses a brass plunger that is held against the workpiece with a spring. Bottom like it’s just not as reliable as the original clamp.

I’m sure different designs exist and many may work just fine...just research before you buy.

I can see that being a problem. Thanks for the info.

Looking good...
Would you share where you found the grate at...
Size would be helpful as well as the thickness...
How hard was it to cut the cast iron?

That wont be necessary...I thought it was cast iron and was thinking about when I build the next one I would use one already cast and go from there...

one thing I might point out is something that I went thru and it looks as though you will/could experience it as well...
When I built the first grate I welded it square to fit the box...then I laid in my additional grates and welded them all up...All material was 1/2 with 1/2 spacing...
little did I know/realize that with the first wrong being in contact with the diffuser wall that I was getting some build up of ash on that bar which was seemingly being carried over into the smoke chamber...
After going back and looking at the drawings it showed that the first wrong was NOT to the edge but recessed in so the ash would have the opportunity to fall thru and not get carried into the chamber...
Hope this makes sense
If not I will elaborate a bit more later...Have to get ready for work now...
paul

Coming along nicely. Hope you allowed for the gasket material around the door? More so around the hinge side. I do like those wheels.

Excellent. Absolutely sucks to find out your door does not fit with the gasket... and you have to cut the hinges. So all good.
