460 pound tank, gravity feed charcoal smoker

My name is Dennis, I've built two of your smokers and love them both. The latest one is the double pan gravity feed smoker which is super easy to use.
I have two 460 gallon DOT tanks that were given to me and id like to make one into a gravity feed smoker. I was thinking of leaving it vertical and duplicate the charcoal fire box/chute from the double pan pattern. I was going to bring the 10 inch C channel in just under the bottom weld line.
Any thoughts on weather that would burn to hot? Would using an 8 inch channel be better?

A few years back, I floated the idea of a 250 or 500 gallon tank based smoker. My g/f promptly put the kibosh on that idea, but she's just fine with the double pan GF.

A vertical 500 gallon smoker..... you're gonna need a ladder. Hold my beer....

My bad, that would be 460 pound tank. We call them 120 gallon propane tanks here in Michigan. they are 30 inches in diameter by 48 inches long.

Phew...units almost as important as a decimal. Think I’ll use this as a real-life example for my 11 yo. He is starting g word problems in math class and not always seeing the importance of labeling his answer.

Howdy Dennis, now that’s funny stuff. I was thinking the same thing..... hold my beer ...... lmao.

I would definitely use the 10 inch channel.

It’s always easier to block off part of the channel then to have to open it up.


Same principle ( but opposite) as building a reverse flow when we extend the baffle past the grease damm. That way if needed we can open it up with minimal effort.
