The round grates look like they were a lot of work but they look great!
Fun project. I’ve seen folks bend angle iron like this before. New respect for them - it’s a lot of cutting. It was satisfying to see it actually work. I’ll find more ways to leverage this process again.

I'm bending 3/4 square stock right now doing the small cuts.....what a pain in the behind! I'm building a Half cab for my Jeep.....lots more work to do before it's ready for a skin. I have to make the rounded roll from the top to the top of the door jamb next and cut off the extra material at the top corners...

On square stock has to be a bear! That many cuts through 3 sides has to burn up some cutting discs or burn up some band saw blades! Looks great. It’s very satisfying to make the curved pieces yourself.

Been doing them by hand with a hack saw....... :headwall:

I have the bottom of the door frames to do yet and those four corners on the top of the cab.....

No, just the brains of a can of spinach.....I also broke my last jig saw blade and have not made it to the store. It's actually easier to do them by hand than with a jig saw...I really need a band saw but I don't have more than 100 cuts left to make :BDHorse:

100 cuts seems like a good reason to go get another jig saw blade ... I think you're my hero.

Did a little work today. Built and attached the covers between the CC, the FB and the WC. CC to WC was straight forward. Just a circle a bit larger than the throat bolted on the side.
Image

The throat cover between FB and CC was trickier. I kept the cutout piece when I cut the original opening and put flanges around it. I put a lip on the other side on the bottom to help slot it into place. Then I put a basic latch that grabs a tab on the inside of the FB.

Image

Previously, I put a throat and cover between the FB and the WC.

This will allow you to set up the smoker in several different config:
1. Standard offset - FB/WC throat closed, CC/WC throat closed, FB/CC throat open.
2. Reverse flow - close the end stack damper, close the FB/WC throat, FB/CC throat open.
3. Vertical smoker - FB/CC throat closed, CC/WC throat closed, FB/WC throat open.

This all depends on whether any of this crap works at all, lol. Lots of theoretical design going on here. Fingers crossed! I’m hopeful.

I’m seriously impressed with this build. These pictures set in my mind what you were describing about the 7” plate you welded across the bottom. I was having trouble picturing it.

Thanks Andy. It’s a lot of fun. Keeps me thinking constantly about the design.

On that plate, can see in the top pic. Below the FB/CC throat there is a plate welded to the bottom of the CC. That is 7” by 36” plate that lays on the bottom the length of the tank. That is the original bottom of the air compressor tank. Whoever owned it originally never drained the water that accumulates in the tank from compressing air and it had significant rust build up the whole length of the bottom. I cleaned it up as best I could and dropped that plate in to cover it all up - both for visual (the damage was ugly as hell) and because there were some serious soft spots.

Worked up the latch for the WC today. It’s a version of the latch @Tospy built for his smoker. Worked out well I think.

Need to work up some sort of handle for it. Maybe a spring. Or an old cut off axe handle.

I’ve been reading about heat control in the warming cabinet and it seems like people are putting vents in them to help keep the heat down. Recommended?

You have a stack on top of your WC so I think you'll be fine, mine is the same set up and I haven't had any issues. When guys first started adding a WC it was just a box over the FB with a door, they didn't have stacks and dampers between them. If you got too much radiant heat there wasn't anyway to bleed it off unless you opened the door and that wasn't very practical so guys started adding vents to let the heat out.

Thanks Big T. Where do your WC temps sit? Are they fairly stable?

It's pretty stable, it stays between 140-165 degrees on a normal cook but my WC floor is insulated. Yours will probably be a little higher due to the lack of insulation but I wouldn't think that they'll be extremely high.

Guess we’ll see. can always put vents in later. Or insulate the floor for that matter.

Been a bit but I have been working on it. The small stuff takes forever! Added my stack covers, put a handle on the WC latch and started the latch/handle for my FB. Going all in on the submarine look with this wheel latch. I’ve got the inner latch mechanism worked out and will get it together this weekend.
