16" diameter offset, is it worth it?

Post by PostOak » October 1st, 2020, 7:58 am

I have access to a bunch of free 16" x 3/8" steel pipe at work, would it be worth the effort to build a smaller cooker? I built the big 24x48 that will fit a ton of food but a small one might be nice for smaller cooks. Does anyone have experience with 16" offsets?

If it's all you can get, I say build it. How long?

I’ve got one....it’s small.

Kept it after I built my bigger pit thinking I would use it for small meals. That was 4 years ago and have only fired it up once. My bigger one really doesn’t use much more fuel, is already set up and is much easier to control so I use it for everything. Absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t build a second pit but really consider if you will use it.

I’d bet you could sell it in a heartbeat if you don’t get much use out of it.

My second build I'm working on now is only 14.5" diameter, and that's 3 x the size of my first one in length!

All depends on what you would use it for I guess. I've outgrown the el cheapo already, but that was more a proof of concept and made from scrap lying around. :)
