Legacy 4800 Build

Post by Saskattak » October 30th, 2020, 10:52 pm

Finally getting after this build. Got the firebox and warming cabinet tacked. Got to say I am thankful that I got the CNC files with these plans! Finally got the tank in the shop today and am currently removing all attachments/nozzles. Taking a break and thought I would throw up a post for my build.

The amount of information and support on this forum sure builds confidence to take on a build like this.

Having all those straight cuts and perfectly square corners sure takes all the fun out of a first build. Measuring and cutting all that plate is half the fun!! Grinding edges, cleaning plasma slag, shifting heavy plates....oh! the memories!

Yea, I am jealous....but don’t tell anyone.

I think so. I do have a few discs here for that purpose. Maybe toss legs on this and a but a disc underneath it to hold briquettes. Head is 0.154" thick so it should heat up and hold the heat decently.

Small bit of progress. Got the flush patches down. This was fun! My career sometimes involves overseeing work like this but in actual pressure vessels where the fitup/welding is critical. But not here on this sh*tbox smoker. These will he located on the bottom so you wont see them anyway. Will add that thru my work experience I was able weld these in with no distortion of the tank. She's still round [emoji1474]

The CC is also on my welding table so I can progress a lot faster now. Next is the fitting up baffle plate, end plate and the firebox.

Side question, what height do you put yr lower rack of the CC at? On the table thebCC centerline is at 48". Curious to know. Obviously how tall you are counts to lol.Image

Yup. Getting those plugs closed up puts. Lot of heat in a small area. Nice work.

On the rack height, I am not a “tall” person. I shoot for 36”-ish. I make my food racks slide outs so maybe not super important for reach, but as long as it’s comfortable for you or whoever your building it for.

Measure your kitchen counter and then decide how comfortable you are preparing food at that height. My bottom rack height matches my counter height and it works out nice. I used this same concept for planning the height on my outdoor island that has my gas and charcoal grills built in so all my work stations are the same height which makes it easy to switch between them.

Perfect idea. I was also thinking about here my grills/WSMs stand for height as a comparison. I definitely think 4' for CC center is too tall.

Not that you need to build to city or state code height for a smoker shelf, but it local codes be used as a rule of thumb.
Here in Calif. The code height on countertops is between 34"-36".
Obviously we can build our own stuff at whatever height we want, but as mentioned above already, its is whatever you are comfortable using.
But somewhere between these figures is pretty much standard....... At least in my area. I built my shelves an both smokers at 36" so I wouldn't be hunched over

I wouldn't put them directly on the bottom, it makes it awkward to scrape the grease. But, I guess if you can grind them totally smooth it's not such a big deal. I messed up and put a long seam right next to dead bottom. I won't do that again.

I cannt access that end anyway. They are under the baffle and at the firebox. No one will ever see those welds again lol.

Got the endplate tacked and the firebox mocked up. This is much bigger then I imagined...yess!! I am debating leaving the warming cabinet off for right now. Current design (and cut pieces) have the door of the WC atvthe rear. I want to have the door on the same side at CC door. As well make a removable, tunable plate between FB and CC. If I wait on the WC i will have more time to get this thing fired and properly design the WC. ImageImage

Got the door laid out. Drew upon my past life in the vessel shop and got this laid out nice and square. Wishing my plasma was 240v, but zipcuts are at cost thru the wife's work. Image

95% cut. All that is left is an inch long, half way cut sections in the middle of the top and bottom cut. This is the four corners. It sprung a bit but I am not sure if this is bad or not. I am thinking its not horrible right now, see what comes when its totslly cut. ImageImageImageImage
