Cinderbrick build

Post by bricksmoker » November 3rd, 2020, 9:28 pm

Building a large cinderbrick smoker. Cook chamber is 64x40x32 . I am putting a 1/2" thick metal firebox inside the cinderbrick firebox with a 1" cushion of sand on all sides for insulation so that cinderbrick doesn't crack. Originally, I was planning on using firebrick but, decided on metal. I already had the firebox and cook chamber mostly completed when I decided on the metal firebox. The 1" space on all sides has caused my throat percentage to drop down to 75% of recommended from calculator. Is there anything that can be done to balance out the lacking 25% such as a taller chimney and or larger intake?

Welcome aboard! Are you building an offset smoker or a vertical with the FB underneath it? If it's vertical then the 75% will be more than enough because the calculator is designed for an offset. If you're building an offset you could try a larger stack to draw the heat out of the FB but I would be sure to put a damper on it so you can close it down if you need to.

Thanks for the reply. I am building an offset with 8" round stack. Calculator calls for a 33.3" height on stavk.

It is always easier to address the issue now as opposed to trying to fix it once installed. That is a big pit and could be a real pain if it isn’t designed properly.

As a suggestion I would look at Roxul wool instead of sand for insulation. This is used in gravity feed smoker builds and works well.

Dargo. How thick is the roxul? I have allowed for one inch between cinderbrick and firebox on all sides of metal firebox .

Comes in different thickness including 1”.

Got mine at Zoro but you may have to find another place as it appears 15 sheets is minimum for this size.
