60 Gallon RF w/ Insulated Firebox

Post by dacolson » November 6th, 2020, 7:24 pm

I started a new smoker this week and opted for an insulated firebox. Haven’t built an insulated one before so it’s a learning process. Fit up matters!! Here are the specs:
- 60 gallon tank - was a 60 gallon vertical air tank I got from my buddy. It’s pristine. (Tempted to use it as an aux air tank for my compressor ... Nah!!)
- 20 x 16 inner FB, 22 x 18 outer FB
- insulated w mineral wool batt - rated to 2000° F
- patio model - going on a cart.

Wow,
already! Hahaha.

I like your vent and control scheme. Is it a signature item for you now?

I like the idea of an insulated firebox, let me know how she runs. Was that your idea or the customer’s?

I don’t have a buyer for this one. Got the tank and have the time so I’m building it. I really like the vent set up so it’s becoming a thing. Looking forward to testing how the box runs. Will definitely post details on how it runs. I’m considering keeping this one and selling my current smoker. This one will be a bit smaller which is attractive to me. If the burner is more efficient like I hope it may earn a spot on the patio.

Something simple Incase I want to put it on a small trailer instead. I have the start of a cart for now I will mount in on but it’s going to go on sled skids so it can optionally be trailer mounted.

You could make a bolt up connection half way down the cart. Disconnect there and mount on trailer with those same bolt holes.

Good idea on the versatility. Always add options when you can. I'm trying to figure out one for the yard. I like those "offroad" type ones but don't need the fancy rims/tires. Definitely will be following along here on yr build.

Exactly down the path I’m thinking. Or simple U bolts over the cross bars. Keeping an eye out for a decent jet ski trailer. Nothing fancy, just get it to the cabin and back.

I have some wide steel rims on my other smoker. 5” wide and the damn thing is so heavy they still sink into the yard. Need to replace them with some fat rubber wheels. Off-road might do the trick for me. I can do with out the fancy rims I see all the time though.

You don't waste any time Dave! Great start already. :)

With the weather at yours have you thought about skis instead of wheels? ;)

There was a build on the forum a few years ago and the member used the tires from on old riding mower. That might be an option if old mowers are as cheap in your area as they are down here.

Minnesota. South of Minneapolis a few miles.

Alright. Lots of progress. I spent the last 5 days finishing the firebox. Took the door apart twice before I liked it. Great learning experience on building an insulated box. Things came together nicely today getting the FB and CC mated up on the cart. Changed out the rear casters under the FB for solid core rubber tires since the FB is insulated. Next up is cutting the CC doors, matching up the baffle plate, and putting together the stack.

Thank you. Yes, I’m hustling. Got two weeks off at work and trying to get the bulk finished this weekend. Yours is coming along nicely too. Love that build. Massive warming cabinet. You’re going to love it.
