Got the tank cleaned up a little and filled in the area that had the valves and gauge. The inside of the left door opening had drooped or dropped noticeably, after the doors and top gauge/vent area were cut out. During welding we got a big bang and notice one of the welds had broken. When Tom finished welding we noticed the droop or drop was visibly gone, measured and found less the 1/8 difference from one side to the other side of the door.

And built a fire pit for the wife

First off, sweet El Camino. Needs to be said. Always love that car.
Nice to have the tank ready to go. Coming along well.

Doors are almost done, one is fully welded, this one is ready to be fully welded. I think it’s pretty cool the tank is from 1968, I have a 1967 El Camino and 1969 Camaro, so now I something from 1967, 1968, and 1969.

Pictures of Camaro for the car guys on here, it was sent to my by original owner, pictures were taken in Late 1970/71

Finished stripping the fire pit, picking up some rustoleum tonight and giving it a coat of flat black tomorrow after final cleaning.

Next weekend I plan to mount the doors and build the hinges, found this while searching for hinges so picked up some wood and going to make templates once doors are in place.

I’m not building anything that fancy, just going to copy LSG’s hinges, I tried to call and buy theirs but they said no, so I’ll just build my own.

Thanks, it was a little work, but found a old registration in the paperwork I got with the car and googled helped find him, all the previous owners were friends and had some info or an actual phone number.

Ok question, I’m going to put in tuning plates, how high? Do I measure from cooking grates/center of smoker or from above firebox opening?

I try to put my tuning plates 6 inches below the grate. And put the firebox throat opening right at that level, so the heat goes right along the underside of the plates. This is with pipe firebox.

Thank you, bought it from the second owner who sold it to buy an RV after his son moved away so he could visit the grand kids, it was a major project but complete and with about 6k in new parts. It was supposed to get painted in April but Covid. Factory 396, turbo 400, 12 bolt with bucket seats and console shift, took me a few years to find a bucket seat center console El Camino.

It’s a hobby, my buddies mom had this parked in the garage for 27 years, she offered it to me, I’m like family but had no were to park it, so I asked her to sell it to my bro in law. I got it running in one day, then we cleaned it up and gave it some TLC. It’s going to paint soon too.

Hi Guys,

ok, need help again. I went to see the water jet guy (Andy) and he offer to cutout all the cutouts for the tank ends. I want to run what I have by you guys and see what you think.

I also need help with the dimensions on the stack side, I have a picture of what I want to do (picture with red circle), but not sure of the size of the opening, FYI stack will be 6" round.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I do mine the same height as what the pipe size is. Makes it look symmetrical. Don't know how you would get all that pre-cut, I do it all on the fly.

Ok, so same size height wise as stack size, how about the width?
Water jet guy is only cutting out the holes while plate is on the table.

I don’t think it matters. I’ve seen them wide, and skinny. Whatever tickles your fancy IMO.

My take on the smoke collector is that it forces smoke down across the grates before it goes into the stack so I try and keep mine pretty close to grate width. I end up being an inch or two short of that on each side.

I like mine wide, too. That's how Franklin does it. Somebody needs to make a video of the inside of a smoker in action. :o

Finally got back to the smoker, end plates are on and firebox was tacked together Saturday. I’m hoping to get the firebox mounted Friday.
