Clear high heat paint?

I found some rustolium 2000 degree clear spray paint. Has anybody tried this on a smoker or do you think it might be good on a smoker. I like my rustic looking smoker but I don’t want it to rust any further.

I haven't seen it so I couldn't really say. But I'm tuned in as mine will get paint in the next month or so

I used a clear rustoleum a number of years ago on a project. It doesn’t get much humidity or moisture but so far, it looks just as good now as when I sprayed it. No discoloring and the base metal is still shiny/untarnished.

This is probably irrelevant as it was neither the high temp variant of the paint nor was it used on a smoker. I was skeptical of a clear finish on bare metal but have to say I am impressed.

I believe that Frank is using some type of high temp clear coat on his drums. You can P.M. him and see what he's using.

Here is a before and after of the smoker with the high heat clear. Not a high gloss but a little gloss. I like it but now we’ll see how good it holds up.

I’ll give it some time and update you. I suspect the firebox might not hold up because it’s not insulated but time will tell.

Fire boxes never keep the paint. Even the high temp stuff tends to peel off sooner or later.

Definitely keep us tuned in tho on how it lasts once you get a couple of good cooks and some summer weather on it.

Be interesting to see how long it lasts... hopefully a long time. But I've never had much luck with clear coat and heat.

Ok. I’ve gone through several cooks now and the clear coat is failing on the top of the fire box. I figured it would though. It’s not flaking or peaking but more like fading away. I’m ok with that though. This was a quick and dirty clear coat and it’s ok everywhere else at this point. Time will tell how long it will last.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like the clear coat doesn’t hold up any better than regular paint....nor any worse for that matter. I’m convinced that getting paint to stick to a firebox is a fairy tale unless you get a professional baked coating.

I think your right. I was betting it wouldn’t but I still like the way it looks on the main cook chamber.

I may try that on the fire box. I have boiled linseed oil. Is that the same or is it actually a difference?

It actually holding up really good everywhere but the firebox. I sort of expected that though. I wiped down the firebox with boiled linseed oil since the clear started to fade away and it seems to be doing good now.

Yeah I really like the look of the unpainted smokers. Mine is hard to keep the temps low. I can do it but I just have to be careful. I want to build a much bigger one but my budget won’t let me yet. Lol

I'm having the same problem with the 75 gallon one I've been using. Yesterday I came up with the idea of using half charcoal/half wood, see if that helps keep a more stable low temp for a longer period.
I have the 171 gallon one in my avatar pic, but it uses too much wood. I want to build one sized halfway between the two next.
