Got a little more work done tonight, smoothing all the cuts from the plasma cutter. Getting ready for the BP installation can someone tell me how much space to leave at the bell end? Also thinking about using part of the rings to make a wood rack. What do you think?

If you go to the calculators section of the pit calcs, there’s a tool in there for it.

And how do you determine what throat percentage? You want to choose?

Some of the guys have posted about how less than 100% is better for draft and for more even temps. I think Frank has a post where he made an adjustable opening at the end of the baffle. If I remember right, he set it below 100%. Not sure how much though. My take is to make it 100%. If you have trouble holding temp it’s something you can easily adjust by adding material to the end of your baffle.

The BP gap is anywhere from 100% of the throat size down to 50% of the throat. I've saw guys build adjustable throats but that's a lot of work that's not really need imo. What I would do is install the BP at 50% opening and weld the grease dam on the BP at the 100% position. When you complete your build you could run a few test fires and see how it performs. If you feel that the BP gap is too tight you can simply take your torch and cut a little off of the end of the BP and enlarge the opening. You can keep testing and trimming it down until you get it where you like it.

I recently saw this brought up on one of the FB builder pages and they were talking that Felton was saying it should be bigger than the throat. I'm of the opinion that smaller than the throat increases velocity around the bend and I see that as a good thing personally but I do want to do some studying.

I think I’m going to make an adjustable one, fix the dam at 100% and make a slide to close down to 50%. I will see how it goes. I should get working on this some time this week. Thank you for all the responses

Not a great night, but we were able to cut the BP. A lot of welding to do this week. I will post pics as we start.

It always takes longer to build a pit than we anticipate. Do it right the first time and it will be worth it in the end.

A little more progress this weekend!
Does this look like it will work? I know we still need the expanded metal.
Thanks

Looks great. Yup. Do you think that front brace will get in the way of your wood? You might consider moving it to the top of the basket. Or leave it and prop wood on it. Either way. Just a thought.

I will look into the brace, I've never run a smoker like this before.
I've never even seen on in person, just taking a leap of faith! LOL
I'm sure I will have a BIG learning curve ahead.
