Second grate

What do people use the second grate for on an offset smoker?

Does it really add value?

More grate equals more meat.

The upper grate is usually a good bit hotter than the lower grate so I like to cook chicken on the top while I have ribs on the bottom.

and if you make the top one removable (you really should) you can pull it out and cook larger cuts on the bottom rack still.

Absolutely nothing....mine is just in the way and gets pulled out and set aside 90% of the time. Nice to have the space for when I run a full case of ribs but for most of my cooks it’s just not needed.
