Ok. Sold this smoker last weekend but the buyer wants a few mods. Figured I’d post the changes as I go. For reference, here’s how it looked a week ago:
C977F903-4C21-4EF2-8477-8EAC412F7257.jpeg
They buyer wants to change the FB door and vents to be like the blue 60 gallon pit with the vents on the side, double latch, and v-log rack.

He also wants a rain cap for the stack - like a roof on stilts - updated wheels, and wants to raise the top cook rack to leave more room for bigger cuts on the bottom. Finally, I’m adding rack hooks to the back of the pit so one or both can be hung up out of the way. Pics coming.

Here are the updated vents and door. I upgraded the front of the FB to 3/8”.

Outside corner welds matching up 3/16” to 3/8” made for some fat welds. Gotta clean them up still and add the door latch hooks.
Instead of putting door flanges on, I welded an entire plate of 1/8” oversized by 1 1/2” over top. Worked out slick.

I screwed up one of the casters on the ugly duckling, moving it back and forth on my bumpy driveway, out to the side of the street. X(

Finished the firebox door, moved the top rack up 2” in the cc, and build a rain cap for the stack. Need to figure out legs for it to sit on to keep it above the top of the stack and keep rain out.

Looks good Dave! I remember this one. This was your first build one this site if I do recall/ Man, hard to get rid of these things after spending so much time with them. The Mrs/ has referred to mine as "the other woman" a few times LOL!! They seem to become like part of the family

Lol. Yes! She’s funny about it too - kind of mad at me for selling it. Didn’t see that coming. Ah well. On the the next one.

Finished the refurb for the buyer on my first pit build. The wheels are not my style but I can’t help be pleased with how it all turned out. Test burn today and it heats up great. Better than the original fb design. The new FB door stayed true as well. A hit with the surface prep wheel on a couple rusty spots and a little linseed oil and it will be on its way to a new home.

Thanks Big T. Yup. Was worried they wouldn’t hold the weight. Holding up like a champ.

I was looking back over this again, lol. I didn't see the rain cap in the final pictures. Did the customer decide against it ?

No steeple on this build. Didn’t go with the go cart wheels. Hanging onto it for a future build.

Well, I don't think I ever posted here but was going to when I built this 18" x 38" inside dimension Octagon Smoker for a friend. He had one problem with it we sorted out I could probably explain why with photos. This is the first one I've ever built. But you can see not the first time I've built something or welded.

I'm going to have some questions especially for you because you built the reverse flow and it's an octagon too. I intend to make this second one a reverse flow. I see you had some temp fluctuations. Hopefully I can avoid that by talking to you. Well anyway I'm Fred and here is my First Build.
Hopefully these images load ok too. You might have to wait a moment, they are all about half a meg and my site is not that fast and it's been a long time since posting on a PHPbb board for me.

I really like your build. May I ask why you put the air holes on the side of the firebox like that instead of the end where the door is? Curious about that.

Is there any kind of calculator or rule of thumb on height of your fire rack from the bottom of the Firebox?

The calculator calls for one set of vents that large so I doubled them up and put them on opposite sides. I moved the vents to the side so I could close one side down if it gets too windy from that direction And still have enough airflow to run.

There’s no calc for fire rack height. I wanted the rack above the height of the vents for air flow under the coals.
