Grinder stuck

Post by dhafling » July 23rd, 2021, 12:03 pm

I have a DeWalt grinder that currently has a cutting wheel on it. Problem is I can not get the the wheel off as the nut is now stuck. I only hand tightened the nut, but while using the cutting wheel, it seized up pretty good. Any tips for getting the nut loose?

I have often removed it with a curved jaw vice grip. The straight jaw vice grips dont grab as well..

Hold the lock down, then whack the wheel with a file until it comes loose.

or, put the grinder in your vise, push the lock in, hold pressure to keep it locked until you can get your other hand on it, turn it with both hands.

I wouldn't hit anything with a file. They're hardened and very brittle. Safety first and all that. :)

Of course the spanner wrench that came with the grinder is the preferred tool, which I always have, especially around the house. But on a jobsite, they get lost, so you gotta use what U got--- Vise Grip, but I assume you either don't have the spanner or you tried it and its not working. I got one stuck so bad several years ago that it snapped the pin on the spanner, but the Vice grip has always come through for me as a last resort..

I have a few pairs of these, and they do teh trick, and in many cases replaced my channel lock adj. pliers.

Mine are stamped the 12LC on the side and measure about 10-1/2" long, The attached pic looks like the small ones, which may not give as much leverage

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I've done it hundreds of times, I'm still here. :D

Sorry, can't help. I've used many dewalt grinders for hundreds of hours over the years and never had a wheel that I couldn't get off easily with the spammer or the newer style Allen key. I do know that the lock-rings are pretty easy to get ant most hardware stores so if you muck it up with players it is easily replaced. How did you make out?

I've had use a large pair of channel locks to turn the grinding disc while holding the lock.

Measure Twice.....Cut Three Times.
