Thanks, Brewmaster!
Got the door handle and stop put on today, buffed all the rust off the stack and welded it on, and just about got the cook and fire grates finished. Trying to cross things off the punch list and see if I can get it finished in under 2 weeks. Today was day 11.
You're really flying, that's amazing!

So, the Ugly Duckling is just a standard offset, no tilted baffle plate. But I'm mulling over the idea of installing a louver type plate above the throat. It would be on a rod that can be adjusted from the outside, to regulate the amount of heat that rises to the top, and at the same time deflect some heat sideways under the grate. The Hogaboom Louver, (patent applied for), coming soon to a smoker near you.

No bi-metal strips for you! :D (interested to find out what direction it sends the gases in though, haha)

I think this is a fantastic idea! Being able to adjust on the fly as convection increases or decreases with temperatures would be pretty cool. Or if you're like me, I keep the offsets inside, and every time I move one out for a cook it works a bit differently if I don't precisely level it. :D

That's it. all the fab work is done, except for the louver. I don't think I have any plate for it, gonna have to study on it a while. Maybe I can cobble something together.
All that's left is stain and finish the baseboard, and burn and buff the old paint, then linseed oil.

I had a guy stop by today to look at Big Tex and The Texas Ranger, moaning about the price and bitching about the cheap smokers they sell at the big box store. :BDHorse:

I just got my Texas State Tax permit so I can take them to the big flea market or out on the side of the road where more traffic is. Facebook Marketplace or out by the side of my street ain't getting it done.

Can't hardly sell them at all unless your name is Franklin or Moberg. Big Tex has been on FB Marketplace for 4 weeks at $2,000 and haven't had a single nibble.

I'm calling it Groves Grills and Pits for now. No logo, maybe that name isn't too conducive to a logo.

That is a great idea dacolson for boomer. I have no interest in selling pits, I would be happy just building one for me to use.

Good work getting that hammered out in 12 days! Interested to see what you come up with for a flapper device too. Send 'em back to the box store with best wishes I say! L-)

Might take a little trial and error to get it right. I'm trying to decide now if I make it a flat plate, with the pivot in the middle, so that when the firebox side is tilted up, the other side is tilted down. Or make it like an flattened angle iron, so the cook chamber side stays horizontal. Probably just have to try one and see how it works, and if it needs to be changed.

Well, here it is, not much to it. Hopefully it will help out with the hot spot a little. Didn't have a wide enough plate to get it closed off all the way sitting dead level, it has a quarter inch or so of gap at the firebox wall.

I did the firebox vent different this time, hope it works.

I'm betting this works all kinds of awesome when in use! Patented flapper and door draft both look great!
