You likely did it, but its a good idea to leave about 1/16" space or so when assembling the hinges on the door in order to accommodate a gasket. Some guys sandwich a piece of 16 or 14 gauge between the door and cook chamber on the hinge side. If not the door hinge will want to spring, and will not want to close properly.
I can see by your workmanship and shop tools that you are a craftsman, so you likely know this, and have accounted for it.
I have made that mistake in past on some stainless steel cabinets that I put together and had to cut my hinges off and rework the hinges. Rushing to make my time on a bid job...
Thanks guys,
@ tinspark....no worry, I 'm using a pretty thin but effective gasket (3mm) and putted spacers of 2.5mm between the door and cook chamber. The gasket metioned in the plans is almost not provided here in Belgium. But the one I use is been proven in my other builds. It closes off everything very air tide
During the build, I'm writing down all the "issues" and things that I can improve in the design. (actually...I'm already making a new design in autocad)
The main issue that worried me and seems to be right is the minor warping of the sheet metal. So the next one will be more based on more sheet metal bending, no tubing but using L bended and C bended profiles like Frank did in his cnc cut diy kit. And ofcourse using the slot and tab method. I've used it before to design stairs without visible welds , but really want to use it in the next build. Improving quality , looks and building time would be great. Keep you posted!!!
Very vert nice work Topsy.. Maybe you can share your improvement suggestions on this thread. We all could learn something from your insight! Keep up the awesome work Topsy!
Very nice. Are you planning on painting it?
I was going to paint mine some exotic color, but a painter buddy came over with a can of high heat black and painted it with one of my paint guns.
Also what are you planning on cooking first?
I just did (7) racks of pork ribs yesterday, The fan controller makes me a better cook than what I really am!!
You will definitely be glad that you went bigger than the mini, especially when you are asked to do a cook for a large event..
I´ll paint the unit mat black and a layer of oil....my first cook will be pulled porc and chicken...hope to give it a try at the end of this week as next week th 21/10, I have an event for ar least 80 hungry people[emoji28]
Thanks guys... will run the probes through a hole , covered by a small round piece of sheet metal that swivels around. Once the cables are through the hole, the little round plate can lock off the rest of the hole. I´ll make some pics tomorrow
After the last details....ready for a big cleanup and finally paint....3 layerd will do,and after that I'll give her a good oil treatment. Using owatrol oil. This will protect the paint some extra and give her a nice shine.
3 layers of coat and 1 treatment with oil later.....the highlights are from the oil....repeating this once in a while will make her shine more and more.
Dialing in....checking the temps at 4 levels and I'm really excited by this results. Getting to 125 degree celsius took 1 hour.....now staying steady for the last 3 hours.....me very happy.
As planned....pulled porc. I did u 10h run on this pp. The gf was loaded with lump charcoal and did what it had to do..... I´m really happy with this build!
